What do you do if your leadership skills fail to motivate and inspire during an interview?

I find that we are often ego-driven in how we approach interview questions. In western culture, it is sort of to be expected. We are instructed to list our accomplishments and peacock ourselves to rise above the rest. I'm not here to say whether or not I believe in or support that approach. But what I think is critical in interviews and everyday conversation, is seek to understand whether or not you provided the value someone else was looking for in you. This takes the focus of the question being asked off of how you want to answer it, and places it back on the originator of the question. What did they ask, and what are they really asking? It goes back to the old advice, "Did you listen to respond? Or did you listen to understand?"

There are also platforms out there to assist in this practice. Even use your trusty old mirror or use Loom. Recording a role play will be the best way to analyze and perfect your interview.

Talking to someone you admire and trust (a mentor) about the interview before going in might keep you from failing to impress. I would talk to my mentor again about the interview if I got the impression that it fell flat. Sometimes overselling yourself comes off as arrogant and uninspiring. Gauge the person giving the interview and respond in like manner. Then, just keep moving.

Focus on sharing specific examples from your past that highlight your ability to lead, solve problems, and drive positive change. Talk about challenges you've overcome, initiatives you've spearheaded, and the impact of your actions on your team or organization. Illustrating your potential through real-life stories can help interviewers see the value you bring.
