What do you do if your leadership skills aren't shining in an interview?

The best thing to do is be genuine in all your answers. I have often felt that some of my interviewers are not connecting. They are not getting what I bring to the table. Stay the course and just be yourself, it might not be a good fit. If you can during the interview and especially after the interview do some reflection on how you are coming across. If you can adjust on the fly do so, clarify, or gain understanding if you can. Sometimes you just do not connect! It's okay just be better next time.

The best way to show teamwork is to put everyone else and their accomplishments first. This is something that had to stop stating we and us because I never highlighted my accomplishments. There needs to be a good balance between you and the team and how you work collaboratively! Never be afraid to promote the things you accomplished as a team.

I think it's paramount to show the challenges and issues that you have been able to overcome throughout your career and lifetime. Overcoming challenges is a crucial part of leadership. Having the ability to adapt and overcome unexpected and expected challenges shows you can work through adversity and are a resilient leader!

Before the interview, thoroughly research the company's background, industry, and recent news. Use this information to tailor your questions and demonstrate your genuine interest in the organisation. Another way would be to inquire about the company's current challenges and future goals. This demonstrates your strategic thinking and ability to see the bigger picture. For example, you could ask, "What are the main challenges the company is currently facing, and how does this role contribute to overcoming them?"

Project confidence through your body language, tone of voice, and ability to articulate your ideas and experiences with conviction. IDEA- Practice power posing or visualization techniques before the interview to boost your confidence and presence, helping you exude a strong and assured demeanor during the conversation.

As you articulate your leadership experiences, employ the Situation, Task, Action, Result (STAR) framework to craft narratives that are both coherent and compelling. Begin by setting the scene (Situation) to provide context, then outline the challenge or objective at hand (Task). Proceed to describe the specific actions you undertook (Action), emphasizing the strategic and interpersonal skills you utilized. Conclude by highlighting the outcomes (Result), focusing on the positive impact and value delivered through your leadership. This method not only structures your anecdotes for easy understanding but also underscores the effectiveness of your leadership approach in tangible terms.

Highlight concrete examples of leadership in past roles, emphasizing outcomes and team collaboration. Use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure responses, showcasing initiative, communication, and problem-solving abilities.

Be Authentic! Authenticity resonates well with interviewers. Share genuine anecdotes and be honest about your leadership journey, as authenticity can be a compelling demonstration of leadership.
