When you notice a disconnect between your IT initiatives and business goals, the first step is to realise your IT initiative isn't an IT initiative. It's a business initiative, with an IT element. As such, it needs a business sponsor and a business owner, and the latter should be monitoring the initiative for progress against desired outcome (not necessarily the plan). This avoids project failure - and by that, I don't mean late, or over-budget - as these could still be successful. I mean failure, as in failed to deliver the expected business value.

Engaging stakeholders and aligning the team's efforts and goals with stakeholder objectives is the most critical component in long term success. I have been involved with projects, across several organizations, where lack of alignment between stakeholders vision and team efforts has resulted in hundreds of FTE hours spent developing what the teams involved felt met the objectives, only to be told they missed the mark. Root causes have included the lack of a clear vision by the stakeholders, a clear vision well developed by the stakeholder team but poorly communicated to the team, the team assuming the objective was understood and not holding regular checkpoint sessions to insure alignment, as well as teams 'knowing better'.

In my experience often we get the stakeholders what they asked for but it’s not what they need. This is a special kind of misalignment because in our culture of doing what we’re told there is often no forum to push back on ideas that are not connected with reality. A very good framework to help avoid this misalignment is Jobs To Be Done JTBD. It helps define the work and the expectations prior to defining solutions.

Prioritisation is something many organisations struggle with. Scoring initiatives based on alignment/contribution to goals can help assess priorities but these should not be relied on alone. Dependencies must also be assessed as typically such scoring mechanisms result in core platform/infrastructure initiatives being ranked low, as they do not directly deliver a result towards the goal, even when they maybe critical in your delivery of future initiatives which do directly deliver results.
