Some modeling software is very sophisticated and costly, take advantage of being a student because many have free-ware versions that are robust enough to get started, learn and understand basic functionality. Later after building a few successful models and sampling different software programs you can consider financing and leveraging your CAD to 3D printing skills.

Something to keep in mind- additive manufacturing is carving its way into very niche applications in various manufacturing sectors- aerospace and defense primarily. Start researching the type of components that are being printed, why they are being printed, and what alloys and polymers are used. Definitely learn about generative design and topology optimization and how to algorithmically alter CAD designs to optimize part structures and functions. Learn how additive manufacturing and CNC machining work together and learn about that level of product development.

3D printing is still “Crossing the Chasm” with business applications. Finding unique approaches and working with the technology as an experimental tool will always set you apart. Try to get access to a machine. Sometimes maker-spaces and even public libraries have simple printers. Take a course at a community college.
