Storytelling is the best way to answer an open ended question about experience. It’s also the best way to organize your thoughts, since it has a beginning, middle, and end. For example, my favorite interview question is “Tell me about a project you saw through from inception to completion.” The best answers will begin with a problem or a challenge, then highlight - in an organized way - how the project unfolded, challenges that came up along the way, and results. In one story, you can highlight your use of technology and systems, time and people management, data analysis, ability to pivot, and soft skills like building consensus. An awesome answer to that one question can tell an interviewer a lot of the things you want them to know.

Be sure you actually answer the question asked. You may provide a lot of good information but if you don't stay on topic and address the specific question the committee will sometimes feel that you are evading their question or can't focus on relevant topics. I find that sometimes writing down a brief summary of the question or asking for clarification if it was a multi-part question is helpful so that you can better organize your thoughts. Also, don't hesitate to take a brief pause and collect your thoughts. Typically, the committee is comfortable with the idea that you are thinking deeply about what they asked. Just don't drag this out too long.

The most important thing is to go in with your thoughts organized so that you feel calm. At the same time, you cannot be so wedded to your way of organizing them that you get thrown off when some one asks a question that starts from a different place than you anticipated.

If we wanted to hear the achievements in a bullet statement, we would have read the CV outloud. What was the catalyst that brought you to this place? What sparked for you? What intrinsic values are you fulfilling when you made these achievements? These can all be examples questions that help you practice your story, and when you share with friends or mentors you may find it may become more conversational which is an indicator, we are getting somewhere good in that delivery.

Using STAR technique to answer questions is a good option. It organises the thoughts and can easily showcase them with an outcome. Logical flow of thoughts is an added value. Confidence and the right attitude is an added advantage.
