What do you do if your game development career needs a boost?

I mean, OF COURSE, I have an answer. You know. I was just wondering if YOU knew. Yeah. Pfffft. Me? I totally know. Ol' Boosty Crossbones they calls me. Here I go boostin' again!

To boost your Unity3D career, start with a self-assessment. Evaluate your expertise in key areas: C# proficiency, understanding of Unity's physics and animation systems, and familiarity with AR/VR development. Reflect on your portfolio—does it showcase a range of projects from 2D to 3D, mobile to VR? Identify gaps in your skill set, perhaps in shader programming or AI. Seek feedback on your work to gauge your progress. Understanding where you stand is crucial for setting targeted goals to advance your career.

Stay abreast of the latest game development tools, engines (like Unity or Unreal Engine), and programming languages relevant to your field. Online platforms like Coursera, Udemy, and Pluralsight offer courses that can help. Specialize: Consider specializing in a niche area within game development, such as AI, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), or mobile games. Specialization can make you more attractive to employers looking for specific skills.

Its more about self-assessment, where you can identify what you need to excel for game development, whether with your game programming or design modeling, etc. So, look at what goals you have for a short or long time to work in the game industry; based on that, you can evaluate yourself much better.

Think of it as a chance to strategise, not criticise. Your strengths far outweigh any weaknesses, which simply present opportunities. Focus on enjoyment over perfection. Consider addressing skills gradually versus overwhelming yourself. Small, steady improvements lead to great success over time. Focusing on personal well-being now helps ensure sustainable passion long-term. Don't forget to recharge!

Always be learning! You will reach a certain point in your current position/stage where you are learning fewer new skills/techniques on the job than you had previously, which is entirely normal. When you reach that point, you need to make the extra effort to learn new skills in your free time. It is best to research/learn new skills or techniques that fit within the parameters of your discipline/company/career path. After learning your new skills, you can attempt to implement them in your current role/work and see if they are beneficial and increase productivity and efficiency. In the best-case scenario, you can add more value to your current work. In the worst-case scenario, you won't use it further and move on to the next thing.

Update Your Portfolio: Ensure your portfolio showcases your best work and reflects a wide range of skills. Include a variety of projects that demonstrate your versatility, creativity, and technical ability. Personal Projects: Work on personal game development projects or collaborate on open-source games. This not only improves your skills but also adds valuable pieces to your portfolio.

In the game industry, it's all about always learning the new features that are added to improve your game. There are various ways you can do that; you can self-educate yourself by learning from online courses, tutorials, blogs, and so on. So, you better work on polishing those skills to your desire career path in the game industry.

Start small so momentum builds. Break large goals into manageable, bite-sized lessons for steady wins. Sample varied resources to identify your preferred learning styles. Diverse inputs yield unique outputs. Most of all, nourish your joy in learning for its own sake. Passion sustains where obligation alone cannot.

Doing personal projects helps in many ways to keep yourself updated with new things. By doing personal projects you can showcase your strength and ability to the the role you are applying for. Such projects not only build your portfolio great, it also help you to do something more creativity to showcase.

Create a per project and implement new tech stacks in it that you think you didn't have time to put in your other work projects. It opens up new possibilities for learning and you have upskilled yourself by doing it. Its really a good practice. But do work on your pet project in your free time.

This is something I struggled with during my career. Start with those around you, your current team. Being honest and vulnerable with your team, with your boss, that's a tough call, but I think it's the right one. Ask your teammates where they think you can improve, "How can I be a better artist, a better game designer, producer?" Make it clear what you're looking for, is it practical advice, career track guidance, maybe it's just support after a really tough sprint. Don't wait on your manager to do your yearly review, seek them out, press them for feedback. I wish I had done this more.

If you need help, please find the right person to give you proper guidance and help. Usually, LinkedIn becomes a huge platform to connect with game industry people whom you can seek mentorship or feedback for anything relevant to your case. Ask for their feedback and work back on it such way you can improve yourself as well. As they are experienced in the industry, they could guide you in the right direction.

having a mentor is really important as they can identify where you are lacking and can better provide feedbacks to you. You wont know about your faults when you are working. Create 1-2-1 calls with your mentor and have healthy constructive discussions

Well-structured companies typically create growth opportunities through collaboration with their leaders or managers. Learning to model the skills of your leaders is a great way to refine your work and acquire new skills.

Build an Online Presence: Create a professional website for your portfolio, write a blog about your game development experiences, or create game development tutorials on YouTube. An active online presence can attract attention from employers and collaborators. Participate in Game Jams: Join game jams to challenge yourself, meet other developers, and complete projects that you can add to your portfolio.

Networking and research are two of the most important factors to improving your employability in any industry. Researching emerging technologies helps you keep up to date with the latest in your industry, and make you stand out from the crowd of people that are stuck in their old ways. Getting to know people at networking events helps people put a face to your name, and can help you understand any gaps in your skill set based on what you and others talk about at the event.

Consider teaching or public speaking to consolidate your knowledge. Pose questions to mentors and leaders - their perspective prevents wasted energy.

When you're boiling in your another project, your sight is probably concentrated into it. My two cents is books - read new or already read books, like sci-fi classics, fantasy classics and so on.
