What do you do if your experience managing internal communications projects is limited?

There are so many wonderful Internal communication resources out there. As a start, I recommend using LinkedIn to its full potential and following some IC professionals and experts who share some great insights, resources, tips etc. Use networking as much as possible. What worked very well for me was joining the Institute of Internal Comms and taking advantage of all sorts of learning opportunities available through this membership (trainings, webinars, peer-reviewed content etc). Their podcast is also excellent so this can be added to your list of helpful resources.

Use AI to build out the basic structure of your project. Don't ask it to do the work for you, but use it as a companion and ask it to ask you questions to help you think through the various aspects of your project. AI shouldn't write your content, but when used iteratively, it can be a great tool for helping you think, plan, and cover all your bases.

If you want to move into internal communications full time but your current role is in another department, explore ways that you can exercise your internal communications interest and help your current team. Can you offer to write department updates, meeting recaps, or be the point person for project updates and information sharing? If you work for a small organization that does not have an internal communications team, can you step up and offer to provide communications support to your manager or other department? Learning while on the job can have big benefits for your professional development, while helping your organization in critical ways.

In most cases, you will need to seek out the feedback. Ask questions that address the content, cadence and channel of the communications. This internal customer discovery will provide huge benefits for your skill development and knowledge. Ask if information is being shared and understood how it was intended to make sure the writing style, tone, and content are clear, consistent and effective. More important than just sharing information is the need for it to be understood.
