It may be that your personality and coaching style aren't resonating with the client. Hone in on their interests to see if you can find a different way of sparking curiosity. For instance, if they love a certain sport, work with a sports metaphor to relate their current situation to the sport and see what arises. What's their learning style? Maybe it makes more sense to whiteboard together than to just brainstorm out loud. If they prefer auditory learning, encourage them to use voice memos to speak their ideas when they're in the gym so that they don't lose that inspiration. Taking time for fun activities also rejuvenates creativity. Often, when we're staring at the screen trying to think of good ideas, it's hard to make them materialize.

Always align with client on the style, type and techniques without imposing them onto him/her. Asking a client what style he/she sees most useful - and what they want from the coach for working through their topic, clarifies it for both sides.

Every coaching relationship is contracted in a way that roles, expectations and preferred way of working is clarified. Yet the human - human connection is what some leaders benefit from most: their position can feel isolated. They might have to carry change topics on their shoulders while sharing is no option for them. A coach is partnering in confidential and safe spaces. Whether you call the usefulness "connecting" or "belonging" fully depends on what the client is really valuing.

This happens and is normal from time to time. We've all been there. The best thing to do is slow down, take a step back and ask your client what they make of moments like this in coaching sessions. Do they feel the same way? Is the client feeling closed to any parts of the coaching you are offering? Is the coaching aligned with what the client is looking for right now? It's important to ask these questions and be prepared to deal with the answer that comes with it. It will only enrich your coaching conversations and allow you and the client to increase your effectiveness. It may be that the coaching container isn't right for your client too and that's important to become aware of as fast as possible.

Leveraging own curiosity and a willingness to explore are both aspects owned by the coaching client. As executive coach, I cannot do my client's job. If there is no curiosity and no willingness, then why invest into a coaching engagement? What a professional coach provides for is process that helps the client to narrow down the challenges into work-able chunks -> less overwhelm might then contribute to their appetite to explore with curiosity and less resistance.
