What do you do if your entrepreneurial venture fails and you want to turn it into a learning opportunity?

For the founder it is super hard to be inspirational to get everyone going with you - and then end up saying that they failed. Even though you love your ideas, money is king, if it is not coming in you need to stop. Do not start getting loans and get yourself in more trouble. It is easier to start again than to stay in debt. Everyone will understand.

As founder, its heartbreaking to pull the plug on something you believe in, especially after you've invested a lot of your time, energy and money into it. Emotions run high and its easy to fall into playing the blame game, which isn't productive and closes you off to learning. Accepting reality and taking a step back to process your emotions creates space for learning to emerge.

When your entrepreneurial venture belly-flops, it’s time to turn detective and hunt down feedback like it’s the last clue to solving a mystery. Don’t just wallow in your own thoughts—reach out to mentors, peers, or even those ex-customers who ghosted you. They’re like your own personal panel of judges on “America's Got Business Problems.” They might notice blunders you breezed past or point out subtleties you missed while you were busy being the enthusiastic CEO. Ask them the hard questions, and really listen. Yes, feedback might sometimes feel like being told your baby is ugly, but it's priceless. It helps you sketch out a more complete picture of your entrepreneurial saga and pinpoint exactly where you can create a better business plan.

The emphasis on constructive - criticism there will be enough. It is truly a gem to find individuals and stakeholders capable and willing to invest their time in the constructive side. Sharing their insights and experience.

I think failing & then reframing it is simply part of the process. Look back - what didn’t align or work and why. Do you start completely over or do you pivot? Get feedback from others - not the yes people, but the people who tell you what you truly need to hear. And above all, failure is not a reflection of YOU - it’s a process, idea, product or service that didn’t work. Learn from it and fail FORWARD.

No one expects a painter to pick up a brush and create a masterpiece, or a musician to be note-perfect the first time they pick up a guitar - so why do we expect business owners to get it right first time? Sure there's a lot you can research before starting which increases your chances of success. But view those hard knocks as good life lessons... You'll know better next time!

Failing is part of the learning process of becoming a true entrepreneur. You definitely became more analytical after you fail a venture and you take many of the teaching lessons to your next venture. It is painful process and you take a while to recover but by showing up daily and not letting the past events hold you back, you can create more value because of your previous experience. It is very valuable to make a shift and analyse market conditions such as size of the market, scalability, commercial relationships and opportunities.

If you are not failing, you are not trying something challenging enough. Failure is inevitable at some point. My advice is to face it head on with full honesty, transparency and humility. Failure can easily make you risk averse. The only way to avoid that is to do something challenging again. In between that, take time to reflect. I mean truly reflect like living in a cabin in the mountain for a month (if you can) and reflect. Write down your lessons learned. Come back to work and go full steam ahead apply those lessons learned.

I think the true test of an entrepreneur's mettle comes not from their successes but from how they forge ahead in the face of failure. Planning ahead is key to transforming setbacks into future triumphs. It involves a clear-eyed assessment of what went wrong and why, followed by the development of a forward-looking strategy. This forward strategy isn't just a plan B; it’s a refined vision built on hard-earned lessons. It means setting new goals, perhaps more grounded and achievable, while also daring to innovate and risk once more, but with greater wisdom.

Now that you've graduated from the school of entrepreneurial knocks. Armed with a fresh batch of insights and a shiny new perspective on failure, consider your options. Maybe it's time to dive back into the startup pool with a better business idea. Set some tangible, slightly ambitious goals—nothing says ‘comeback’ like a good challenge. Sketch out a roadmap to hit those milestones, factoring in all the resources you'll need this time around, from funding to friendships. Think about how to sidestep the potholes you hit last time. This planning phase isn’t just about filling out spreadsheets and timelines; it’s about channeling your newfound wisdom into a blueprint for success. My experience in starting a business has helped other people who are considering dipping their toes in the entrepreneurial waters. A person with an idea or product who’s eager to set up a business and set the world on fire without doing the necessary work beforehand is a perfect prospect for my consulting practice. In my experience, entrepreneurship involves constantly being curious and staying inspired - it’s the core energy. Reaching within oneself, connecting more deeply with who and what’s around us and in the corner of our eye, can spark energy. Iteration is a kinder and more accurate term for this notion of failure. To fail is to be judged as though ambition and drive are simply widgets. You know in your gut how close you got to realizing a vision that others could relate to, find value in. Rather than discontinue, reinvent with a clearer set of principles and a vision set on the impact that you are uniquely capable of having. There will be best practice, and it helps with efficiency and communication. But don’t be fooled into following someone else’s path. Yours is far more interesting. There are only 2 things that happen when you are an entrepreneur- either you succeed or you Learn. If you accept failure then you have neither succeeded nor learned. Understand and analyse the reasons. Usually 2 things happen 1.either your idea was something done better many times over by others or 2. Your execution fell short. If it’s the 1st type then you need to pivot into something else and if it’s the 2nd type then plan and redo. Always remember unless you’ve failed and floundered then you have not grown. Keep your chin up, believe in the journey and you will get somewhere meaningful and significant

Manifestation works. As my business shuttered and I found myself with more time, instead of focusing on the negatives and what didn't work out, I turned to gratitude and manifestation.

I'd like to challenge people to reevaluate what they consider failure. When is it failure and when is it a lackluster milestone? When do we take the data and make the call to pivot vs when do we trust our vision just a little longer? Failure is measured against metrics and we control the metrics. So the learning opportunity is in how we calibrate the metrics, and making sure we're measuring something impactful for the organization. Tune the organization, listen to that engine hum, and you will accomplish top level metrics.

A failed venture is usually a bridge to your next step. It builds opportunities, knowledge, connections. In that regard there are no failed ventures, it’s all gained experience that makes you more capable toward the next one
