Engagement is crucial for a successful elevator pitch. If you notice eyes glazing over, change tactics. Use storytelling to make a connection, as people are naturally drawn to stories. A very common saying states that writing short pitches is much harder than long arguments. Certainly the reason why an elevator's pitch often does not touch the audience as expected. There are surely many reasons for this disappointment but one of the most common is the lack of engagement with your audience. Would you consider writing an elevator's pitch with no marketing arguments but simple terms describing what you do and why it addresses current market needs. What don't you start with the "Why". "This is because... you surely have felt in need for xx, that my company has created yy chain of services and deploys them for such and such clients in these markets.Then add the How and you will engage them without a doubt.

3 Simplify It

Complexity can be the enemy of clarity in an elevator pitch. If your audience can't grasp what you're offering quickly, they're likely to disengage. Simplify your language and avoid jargon that might not be universally understood. You want your pitch to be accessible to anyone, regardless of their background or expertise. An elevator pitch that's easy to understand and repeat is more likely to be remembered and shared.

After 25 years communicating for experts in Finance, I can tell how knowledgeable these people are but also how complex their topics can be. Making a complex topic simple to understand needs a lot of practice but this is feasible. "Talk to the dog"! is a good trick to succeed. Whomever you pitch your activity to, you will have a unique chance to make your first good impression. Better to say something simple to memorize and illustrated with a few examples. What is simply said is easy to memorize and to repeat. When you pitch someone with an elevator's pitch, imagine you face young students. Read in their eyes to assess their level of understanding and experience in your field. Use examples and see if they nod.

I must've repeated my elevator pitch atleast 15 times in my head before standing up to deliver it in a room full of entrepreneurs and VCs. And this is AFTER already having spoken it many times before. But I felt so much more confident and was able to even get a conversation going around the pitch. So, practice. Use voice modultations and emphasis as you see fit while delivering the pitch to keep the person/people interested.

5 Adapt It

No single elevator pitch will suit all audiences or situations. Be prepared to adapt your pitch on the fly. Pay attention to cues from your listener—are they interested in a particular aspect of your pitch? If so, expand on that. If they seem confused, clarify. Having a flexible mindset allows you to tailor your message in real-time, increasing the chances of making a meaningful connection.

Depending on who are speaking in front of, be ready to improvise. A pitch to a potential investor will not be the same as a pitch in a networking event, will not be the same as a pitch to a room full of peers. Keep it relatable, actively look for cues before and during the pitch to know where and how to lock their interest.

After delivering your elevator pitch, it's critical to assess its effectiveness. Did it lead to a deeper conversation or a request for more information? If not, consider what could be improved.
