What do you do if your efforts to build strong relationships with senior stakeholders are falling flat?

It’s important to stay aligned on scope and timeline to ensure the right communication and work plans are in place. If there is misalignment, take time to consider how plans can be modified to move forward.

1. Create quality dialogue. The Stakeholder needs to understand that YOU understand. That must show in your dialogue. 2. Be clear and unambiguous in conversations. Do not create a storm of activity and shroud out the true purpose and essence of the discussion. 3. Ask a lot of questions. Maybe not a lot but enough! It's better to get the clear picture when communicating with stakeholders than to miss the plot completely.

One thing I found that helps is when there is alignment on startegic priorities and everyone is contributing to that outcome, this helps depend conversations, work through constraints, risks and opportunities and improve overall dialogue.

It is important to actively listen to understand the client or business partners concerns or pain point/s. Play back your understanding and make an effort to provide meaningful solutions with options where possible that shows that you did understand what the client is asking for

Stakeholders love to see value. Showcase it! Your value proposition should be at the fore front of every major discussion. Communicating effectively with anyone who gives you value and aligns with your objectives makes project execution much easier.

I agree personalize approach is effective this brings your Midas touch to it. This personalized approach can be done when you interact more with the stakeholders then you can get to know their ways and then adapt to it. In my experience see the way they answer your questions and then based on that you can find the pattern. It’s more about observing and listening then you can come up with approach. Eg : some would like F2F way / virtual / hybrid. Until you interact with your stakeholder often you can’t tailor. Once you crack it that would always add a special value to your stakeholder since you tailor ever stakeholder differently because you make them feel special.

It shouldn’t have happened. If, unexpectedly, it happened out of reasons beyond my control, I would try 3 angles to strengthen the relationships. (1) Taking advantage of their seniority: making the senior stakeholders mentors and myself a mentee. (2) Investing efforts more wisely: quality outperforms quantity in building truthworthy, strong relationships. I could personalise my efforts to win their minds and hearts. (3) Making their life in the office/organisation easier or freeing up their office hours more. Human resources has a hierarchy, and so does work breakdown. Using the human body as an analogy, senior stakeholders should deal with those that can be done only by the head and those below them in the team take care of the rest.

Seek Feedback - Reach out to trusted colleagues or mentors for feedback on your interactions with senior stakeholders. They may offer valuable insights into areas where you can improve. If appropriate, consider directly asking the senior stakeholders for feedback on how you can better support them or improve your working relationship.

You also need to recognize that not all relationships are going to be smooth sailing; human relations and engagements are complex and you will need to accept that in some cases you will not get it to where you would like, none the less a level of professionalism should be maintained by all, all the time.

In my later career stages, I realized that beyond technical expertise and skills, the perception senior stakeholders hold of you is crucial for your advancement. No matter how hard you try, if stakeholders do not alter their perception of you, it can hinder your progress. Identify influential stakeholders who can help change the opinions of those with fixed views about you. Focus primarily on delivering quality work and demonstrating your value; the rest will naturally fall into place.

Systemic escalations, pro active pros and cons analysis combined with an articulated RACI on each issue will go long way in earning customer trust.

It all depends on the definition of “senior” and their position in the life cycle of the relationship: If the "senior" can be bypassed, escalate. If this is the beginning of the relationship, disqualify.
