Celebrating diversity and continuously monitoring and adjusting strategies are essential for fostering an inclusive workplace culture. These proactive steps empower organizations to effectively address shortcomings and promote diversity and inclusion for all employees.

Thorough Analysis: Before you can fix any problems, you need to identify them. Conduct a thorough analysis of your D&I data, such as employee demographics, engagement, retention, promotion, and feedback. Quantitative and Qualitative Insights: Compare your results with your goals and benchmarks, and look for any gaps or discrepancies. Additionally, consider conducting surveys, interviews, or focus groups to gather qualitative insights from your employees and stakeholders. Transparency: Be honest and transparent about your findings, and acknowledge any shortcomings or failures.

If the organizational culture is not conducive to inclusive behaviors, initiatives may face resistance and fail to gain traction. Unconscious Bias: Unconscious bias in hiring, promotion, and decision-making processes can perpetuate disparities and limit the success of diversity initiatives.

I would also do a survey within the organisation to ask directly the employees and management what they think of the DEI strategy and what's its impact. It might be than they don't feel talked to at all. Example if big part of your employees are muslim and you don't do any DEI initiative. It might explain why those employees are not engaged with a too broad and general DEI strategy. Build your DEI strategy on your employees needs and pain points. Not your own vision.

Based on Analysis: Make changes to your D&I strategy and action plan based on your analysis and diagnosis. Alignment with Goals: Redefine your vision, mission, and objectives if necessary. Adjust your scope, timeline, and budget. Policy and Practice Revisions: Revise policies, procedures, and practices, or introduce new ones. Involve different people, teams, or partners as needed. If my D&I efforts are not yielding results, I would take a proactive approach to revise my strategy and action plan. Firstly, I would conduct a comprehensive assessment to identify any shortcomings or areas for improvement in the current approach. Then, I would seek feedback from stakeholders, including employees from diverse backgrounds, to gain insights into their experiences and perspectives. Based on this feedback, I would adjust my strategy, setting clear objectives and implementing targeted initiatives to address gaps and overcome barriers to I. Additionally, I would ensure that D&I efforts are integrated into all aspects of the organization's culture and operations, fostering a sense of belonging and equity for all employees.

In any project, especially those that are significant and aim at real changes in the company/society, it is important to experiment with different tactics, to ask for feedback, as much and as critically as possible, from employees, friends, acquaintances etc. and then to redo the plan and try again. So, keep investing! Results rarely come from the first try, they are only seen after you gain experience. At Kaufland Romania, we managed, after several initiatives implemented internally and externally, to become a company known for promoting diversity and inclusion and to have over 450 employees with disabilities across the country.
