What do you do if your design process in landscape architecture needs feedback?

1 Define your objectives

Before you seek feedback, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve with your design, and what criteria you will use to measure its success. Your objectives should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART), and they should align with the vision and values of your client, users, and community. Having well-defined objectives will help you communicate your design intent, and also help you evaluate the feedback you receive.

2 Choose your methods

When gathering feedback in landscape architecture, it is important to consider the stage of your design process, the type of information you need, and the resources you have available. Additionally, emphasize your objectives and how your design meets them with headlines, summaries, or captions. Showing your process and how you arrived at your design with sketches, diagrams, or narratives is also important. Furthermore, providing alternatives and explaining the pros and cons of each one with comparisons, tables, or charts is beneficial. Finally, ask for feedback and specify what kind of feedback you want with questions, prompts, or scales.

5 Conduct your feedback

Once you have prepared your materials and selected your participants, you are ready to conduct your feedback. Depending on the method chosen, different steps and protocols may apply, however, some general guidelines should be followed. To start off, it's important to set the tone and expectations for the feedback session by introducing yourself and your project, explaining the purpose and format of the feedback, and thanking the participants for their time and input. Additionally, present your design in a clear and concise way with slides, posters, or models that highlight the main points and questions. While facilitating the feedback, encourage participation and interaction by asking open-ended questions, listening actively, acknowledging and clarifying the feedback, and summarizing and confirming the key points. Lastly, record the feedback by using notes, audio, video or photos to document the results and outcomes of the session. Organize and analyze this data for further use.

6 Apply your feedback

The last step of the feedback process is to apply your feedback and use it to improve your design. This may involve making changes, revisions, or refinements to your design, or validating, testing, or implementing it. To do this effectively, you need to review and evaluate the relevance, validity, and usefulness of your feedback in comparison with your objectives, criteria, and alternatives. It's also important to prioritize the feedback you receive and decide what to act on and what to ignore or defer. To make sure you're incorporating feedback into your design appropriately, create a timeline, budget, or checklist. Finally, communicate your actions by creating a report, newsletter, or presentation to inform stakeholders about the changes you made.
