To proper measure database and performance it's important to have a report from before and after doing the changes tools like pgbench, mysqlap are suitable for doing heavy load testing

Query optimisation in my experience has worked almost 9/10 times. A lot of times we are fetching data more that it’s required. Understand the query plan , identify big look ups or table scans, partition your data and put partition keys in your queries. Use indexes. There can’t be a single solution to the problem but the investigation starts from checking your query in terms of business , functional data then digging further using execution plan.

Improving the hardware is a quick way out of the problem, but after a short time the problem will recur. Adapting the query and updating modes of data efficiently is the real work.

What do you do if your database performance tuning tools aren't enough? If I had a bottleneck somewhere in the process and/or with some technology, the first thing I do is investigate which companies have a similar profile to mine and then I identify the most successful ones. Once there, with 3 or 4 similar and successful companies, I found out what technologies they use to try to assimilate their results to my problem.

Of course, the starting point is measure what you can. But given the tools aren’t cutting it that might not help. These days, I’d probably dump all the schemas and queries into a LLM and ask it for suggestions. In the past, I’d probably measure some experiments using something similar to a binary search until I get something that seems odd. Then I’d dig in to figure it out. All the suggestions should fail if the tools aren’t cutting it. Look for different tools is also a good suggestion.

Consider application level data sharding. Always works but can be expensive to implement, so this method is definitely not for everyone.

The before mentioned methods will help finding and resolving most problems. But be aware that sometimes it's simply the implementation or the approach where the issue lies. For example there may be fast tools to load tables, but they lock the tables while doing so. Or there are columnar features that offer great compression, but have issues with updates.
