Be holistic while assessing gaps, identify cloud assets types (apps, DBs, buckets, etc.), consider all the stages of data lifecycle (access, transit, store, delete) , then think of controls that would protect data at each stage. Use risk management to prove yourself while implementing controls. Maybe some combinations of asset+stage would require more protection than others.
