1 Understand your audience

Before you present your ideas, you need to know who you are talking to and what they care about. Different stakeholders might have different perspectives, interests, goals, and concerns when it comes to the system you are working on. For example, the customer might be more interested in the functionality and usability of the system, while the manager might be more concerned about the budget and schedule. The technical team might be more curious about the technical details and feasibility of your ideas, while the end-users might be more focused on the benefits and impacts of the system. You also need to explain how your ideas can solve the problem effectively and efficiently, using logic, reasoning, and scenarios to illustrate your point. You should also highlight the benefits and advantages of your ideas over the existing or alternative solutions, using quantifiable and measurable outcomes to demonstrate your impact.

In my experience, for new stakeholders its always good to start with the context, background and process of what you are trying to do. Best in person, then phone or online, then email. Building good rapport with stakeholders is key.

Sometimes I come across poorly designed slide decks with way too much information. But I understand that in today's fast-paced corporate environment, deadlines are all around us. And it shows, because sometimes it's plain to see that slides had been prepared superfast. I'm also aware that corporate design can put a few constraints on free wheelin' design ideas. It's a fine line to walk, but I would still try to break the mold a bit. Add surprises and lots of personal touches along the lines of "my greatest hits vs. my biggest fails" :-) Your audience will be grateful if you don't do another presentation from 07/01/2023 (presenter just forgot to update the timestamp :-) Final words: Away with you, you dreaded bullet lists!
