I agree very much with this suggestion, and I would add to be mindful of the fact that the perceived unresponsiveness is just that it is your perception. Remember that the other person has a way of viewing this and what you’re reading us on this could be anxiety, concern, or just their asset, which is different than what you were anticipating.

Motivational interviewing and active listening go hand in hand. Both can play a key part in how difficult conversations progress. Actively listening to your coworker or employee, understand their point of view, then using motivational interviewing to steer them in the right direction can positively influence their next steps. Motivational interviewing allows the individual to feel supported and inspired to take action in a positive way. Typically, I would include motivational interviewing in between active listening and providing support.

Offering support can go a long way in making your coworker feel valued and understood. Whether it's providing resources, assistance with workload, or just a listening ear, showing that you are there for them can help ease their emotional detachment. It's important to be sincere in your offers of support; insincerity can be easily detected and might lead to further withdrawal.

This is such an important step and it is often overlooked. The difficult conversation once completed, any ground that is made has to be nurtured and watered and kept up. My suggestion is to put in your calendar times in which you will intentionally follow up with the person to see how it’s going, and check in with yourself to see if you’re honoring any commitments that you may and that you are having the outcome that you wanted. If anything is a mess or not going as intended then work needed to get the relationship back into the ground that you want it to be.
