What do you do if your consulting project fails and you need to stay composed?

When a project fails, accept it as a team and don't blame it on individuals. Do retrospect, take key points and share with the team.

When facing project setbacks, the path to resilience is embracing reality with grace. It’s about standing firm amidst the storm, acknowledging the situation without self-blame or despair. I approach each hurdle with a calm recognition of the facts, knowing that it’s a shared journey. We convene as a team, not to point fingers, but to collectively acknowledge our current state. This breeds a culture of trust and solidarity—essential for the journey ahead.

When a consulting project fails, maintaining composure is vital for professional integrity and future opportunities. Firstly, acknowledge the failure openly, taking responsibility without shifting blame. Analyze the reasons behind the failure objectively, identifying lessons learned and areas for improvement. Communicate transparently with stakeholders, providing insights into the situation and outlining steps to mitigate any negative impacts. Focus on salvaging relationships and offering solutions to rectify the situation, demonstrating resilience and commitment to client satisfaction. Use the experience as a valuable learning opportunity to refine strategies and approaches for future projects, showcasing adaptability and growth mindset.

There is no such thing as failure in consulting. There's only learning. If the execution is not delivering result, it calls for analysis of the entire chain from start to end to determine where the problem lies: concept? Strategy? or execution. Learn, improvise and move forward!

The faster you understand your situation, the better you will gather your thoughts. If you need time, like a few hours, or even sometimes a few days, to stay away from everything and feel much better to gather your thoughts, do it. Whatever you do, don't even try to ignore or change reality, or worse, look for someone to blame. Take full responsibility for it and get back on track.

With the situation acknowledged, we pivot to analysis with the objective lens of learning. Our meetings become reflective sessions where we dissect each decision and outcome without the cloud of emotion. Was it a misalignment of resources, a gap in skills, or an unforeseen market shift? Take all the details, study every little detail that seems unimportant, and restudy every step you and your team took to get there where you are right now. Analyze everything, ask for feedback, and ask good questions.

Talk to each one of them as much as needed to clarify everything and let them know every little detail; they may see something that is hidden from you and help you analyze things better and faster. You shouldn't deal with everything alone; you are all together in this, whether you win or fail.

Be realistic - when you are long in consulting you will experience many failed projects and some outright awful. After 15 years I can honestly say I had some brilliant memorable projects I cherish and really miss people and firm, other clients and colleagues were directly out of hell. Some projects are so awful you never want to meet these people again. Here’s what is happening often but no one talks about. As BIG4 and other top consultants we are very expensive and some clients behave unethically and hostile. It often can have million other reason beyond our work. Clients do that. Don’t take it personally just acknowledge the situation and move on. It’s called resilience and you have to have it to survive jungle called consulting.
