I have learned that in person training with actual simulated situations have been beneficial for me and my team. Bring in a coach/trainer that has the skills to recognize the deficiencies of the team and structure the training around those deficiencies is needed. I have had trainers send questionnaires prior to the class, so that they can make sure they are addressing the questions and concerns around the topic. Leadership is a skill that needs to be cultivated and nurtured.

To coach a consultant in leadership, you must first set the goal of them being a leader in position. Once they try to do this, you will be able to see the gap in their skills, that obstructs them in doing that. Provide training for the gaps that you see. DO NOT give generic training. They will hate it and feel that it is patronizing.

I've been privileged to experience leaders I look up to, and other managers who I have learnt what I didn't want to exhibit in my style of leadership; while it is your own choice to paint the path of the type of leader you want to be. Leadership / management isn't for everyone, and is said to be one of the most difficult things esp. to gain the respect of mentees, peers, and wider community - because people are human with free will from different walks of life. One of the best advice I've recieved was that you cannot please everyone. I recommend someone who wishes to become a leader / mentor / manager to be adaptive in your approach. And I'd hope anyone wishing to be a leader, please learn and exhibit professional respect.
