What do you do if your communication skills are lacking in Executive Coaching?

Get a Coach! If one really believes in the power of coaching, then coaches should have coaches. It is the fastest way to develop skills like communication which is the bedrock of coaching. A good coach will help you to assess where you are, ID blocks to effective communication, hold you accountable for honing communication skills and provide support to develop communication skills.

I immediately address this gap, recognizing that effective communication is the cornerstone of impactful coaching. I start by seeking feedback from clients and peers to identify specific areas for improvement. Then, I commit to communication skills training, exploring areas like non-verbal communication, empathy, and assertiveness. Practicing these skills in safe environments, such as peer coaching sessions, allows me to refine them before applying them to clients. I also consciously try to read extensively on communication theories and strategies, incorporating new learnings into my coaching practice. Reflecting on my interactions and continuously seeking feedback help me gauge my progress and make ongoing adjustments.

Assess honestly...interesting. As coaches, particularly executive coaches, we tend to assess others rather than assessing ourselves. Yeah, I said it! What do I mean by that? Executive coaches tend to have a certain level of confidence, some of which is natural and some of which is determined by learning from others. In my practice, I am very comfortable with asking for feedback...from the executive, the organization, and most importantly my trusted mentor. As a mentor, I have learned how direct feedback adds strength and value to coaching. This means that I will be an always learning coach. open and ready for any constructive feedforward that will enhance my services to my clients.

I've worked with a lot of clients who felt their communication skills were holding them back. What's the first move? Honestly figure out where you're at. It's important to get a real sense of how you come across when you talk. Are you clear or do people get lost? Do folks listen up or zone out? Getting honest feedback from people you trust can really open your eyes. It's all about knowing your starting point. Once you do, you can make a solid plan to get better. Don't skip this step, it's key to improving your communication game.

In many years of communication and leadership training, I have had the following experience again and again: First of all, communication is never what you say, but what the other person does. If I'm not sure about my communication skills, I should get feedback from a professional 'other'. I gain self-confidence and self-assurance through consistent communication training and professional coaching. A trusting and open cooperation is the basis here.

TIP - Integrate self-reflection into your coaching routine. Beyond gathering external feedback, dedicate time after each coaching session for personal reflection. This practice allows you to assess your performance critically: pinpointing strengths, identifying improvement areas, and recognizing patterns in your coaching style. Develop a reflection sheet tailored to your specific growth areas and use it to score your effectiveness and note actionable insights post-session. This method ensures that you're committed to self-improvement. Remember, what gets measured, gets managed, and ultimately, improved. This disciplined approach to reflection and self-evaluation is instrumental in honing your skills as an executive coach.

Communication does not mean only verbal, as a coach you need to learn how to communicate in a holistic way. Do coaching supervision and take help from mentor coach to improve your skills. I normally do lot of peer and pro bono coaching to improve my communication skills. Observe some great coaching demo. Improe active listening skills. Do mindfulness meditation. Finally it is a journey and practice rigorously

I would rather say, seek 'feedforward' from clients, peer coaches, and your mentor coach or coach supervisor to gain valuable insights into your communication style. Request specific 'feedforward' on areas such as clarity, empathy, active listening, and rapport-building. Be open to constructive criticism and use it as a guide for refining your communication skills and enhancing your effectiveness as an executive coach.

Seeking out constant feedback is the best way to learn and grow, you're constantly learning from yourself and others, which would give you a really good way of improving your communication skills

As a coach, I am continuously and voraciously invested in my development. And a critical part of the development is getting regular feedback from clients and colleagues you trust around areas of strength and areas for growth. We all have “delta’s” and if communication is an area for growth, I’d seek input for specifics and make a plan to grow stronger in this area. In addition, I’d enlist the support of an accountability person to check in with so that we can track progress and motivate and inspire eachother in our respective areas of growth.

Role-playing is crucial in improving communication skills. Many people find recording their presentations uncomfortable, but if it's supported by communications/presentations coaching/training, one can accelerate the learning significantly. And you need to practice over and over again. Seek every opportunity to present (without dominating every meeting ;) )

We need to implement & incorporate the learning which we got through Feed-forward. If we are sceptical about implementing with real clients, we can take the help of peer coaching groups. By this we can understand where we are & how to make it better. Once the confidence comes, we can implement it with the real clients

Practice these skills in low-stakes environments before applying them in critical situations. Role-playing exercises with a coach can be particularly effective, as they provide a safe space to experiment with different techniques and receive constructive criticism. Has stated using a basic place to practice helps you to see your mistakes before it causes harm.

When it comes to conversations, you might be lacking in style, knowledge, finding the right audience, or how you deliver your message. Properly assessing your needs can point you in the right direction to start refining your skills. From there, you might consider taking courses or seeking advice from an expert to further enhance your abilities.

Learning is not a OTP (one time process) the progress comes only through continuous learning, Upskilling & assessing. A common goal should be there & coaches should foster learning through Mentoring & also individual coaching. If the learning can bring some new elements in coaching & make the conversation interesting certainly there will be progress but constant monitoring & reviewing is a must.

Adaptability is key in executive coaching, especially when it comes to communication. Tailor your communication approach to suit the individual needs and preferences of each client. Remain flexible and adaptable in your communication style, adjusting your approach based on the situation, personality, and communication preferences of your clients.

Has started, Communication is not one-size-fits-all; different situations require different approaches. As you develop your skills, learn to read the room. What works in a board meeting may not work at a team retreat. Be prepared to adapt your style to the audience and the context. But having a flexible personality is a blessing on it's own.

Flexibility and customisation are the key factors of communication in executive coaching. We cannot have the same pattern in communication. It has to change from person to person & case to case. But we learn through the experience. Without good communication, coaching will fail big time. Even credentials will not work

The focus of communication & coach training tends to about YOU and YOUR skills. However, the opposite is true. The ICF presumes clients to be "naturally creative, resourceful and whole." This also means they trust YOU to have everything you need to work out how to communicate in service of your client. I know right? How annoying is that? Well, that's how your clients may feel when you ONLY ask back-to-back GROW questions. There is so much to consider when the term "communication skills" is used other than speaking. Tone, inflection, pronunciation, dialect, accent. Sometimes a bit of patience and slowing down is all that's needed to improve communication between two people especially if they speak different languages as their first language and are conversing in a second language. Other times it pays to invest in specific communication/speaker coaching to improve. If you are working on increasing your presence, impact and influence as an executive then having the ability to communicate/present/speak effectively is a valuable skill to have and worth investing in.
