What do you already know about your style of communication? Are you blunt? Do you notice yourself interrupting others, waiting impatiently for a gap to hijack the conversation and talk about your experience or the person you know who had a son whose wife had the same problem? ?? Or maybe you are the thinker who came up with the perfect answer an hour or so after the meeting. Sounds harsh when put like that, but most of us do it at least some of this some of the time. Communication is a really critical thing! We can have great ideas and excellent strategies and plans, and it can all fall apart when we do not have key communiction skills. Key communication skills to me extend in two directions: First, the direction of listening, being able to hear other people's perspectives, needs, and insights, and Second, the direction of speaking, with clarity, honesty, as well as with care and compassion. Assessing yourself honestly on these is a solid step. I would also encourage you to get feedback from people around you, both in your personal life and professional, and both from people who are your peers as well as supervisors/mentors and juniors/employees.

By observing successful entrepreneurs with strong communication skills, you can gain important insights into their techniques, approaches, and strategies. Pay attention to their body language, use of language, voice tone, and overall communication style. This observational learning can provide you with practical examples to emulate and adapt to your own communication. Also, successful entrepreneurs often use a variety of communication tools such as stories, humor, and data to convey their message. You can benefit by studying how they employ various tools in their kitbag to engage with, inform, and influence their audiences. Experiment with integrating storytelling, humor, and data-driven insights into your own communication repertoire.

A lot of people interpret “learn from the best” as seeking out people. I have gained tremendous knowledge on how to communicate effectively by reading! Whether you pick up a physical book or play an audio book, reading expands your vocabulary and understanding of sentence structure. Be intentional as you read. If you come across a word and you don’t know its meaning. Stop, look up its definition, and practicing writing it out a few different ways in a sentence. You’ll be surprised how quickly it becomes a part of your verbal communication.

I have found that certain modalities of communication add enormous value, and I want to highlight the ways that Nonviolent Communication (NVC) can help in this realm. NVC helps us shift our conversations from diagnosis, blame and judgement, towards deeper connection. It comes with certain steps and directions, and skills which helps us to show up authentically, with care and empathy, and to be more effective leaders. NVC is also ONE of many ways that you can approach connection! Investing in learning, especilly around your edges, can be incredibly helpful on your entrepreneurial journey.

I always say private practice determines public performance. Speak out loud. Walk around your bedroom, talk to yourself out loud in the mirror. Pro tip: Record yourself and play it back. Theres nothing like hearing your own voice. It can be cringy! It’s also highly effective. Hear all the things you like and double down. Take one or two things you don’t like and attempt to improve on the next recording.

If this goal is important to you, set aside intentional time to practice, play with different styles, and reflect on those styles. Where appropriate, get feedback from others on what worked and did not work in different situations.

Being vulnerable and open to receiving feedback is important. Feedback is love - good or bad. Ask a friend or colleague you respect to role play with you some scenarios which allow you to show your style and hear your tone of communication. Let them offer “second set of eyes” in written communication. And then sit back and be ready for feedback. One other thought is to record yourself so you can play back, reflect, all of your verbal and nonverbal communication skills.

In my opinion, this is often the quickest and most accurate method to improve our communication skills as an entrepreneur. Not only do we become more self-aware of our communication strengths, we can gain more knowledge of our communication areas of improvement through the blind spots observed by people around us. Another good model to consider is the Johari window, in which you and your team can adopt this coaching model to develop better self and team awareness in improving interpersonal and small-group communication.

Getting good feedback requires you know your purpose beforehand. Wanted to close a deal? Get feedback from the "No"s. Wanted to inspire the team? Ask key leads afterward how they feel about the plan. Good feedback also requires you ask useful open ended questions. Worried about clarity? Ask what key messages did someone takeaway. Wondering if your message was exciting? Ask your audience how they felt after hearing/reading you. Lastly, good feedback requires the right givers. Don't just ask people who like you - you'll hear platitudes. For internal comms, ask colleagues with a rep for critical thinking and candor. For external feedback, highlight your growth mindset and customer obsession to invite candor and build trust.

When you seek feedback, remember to set clear boundaries on what you need help with so your feedback session doesn;t become a session that is irrelevant and demoralizing.

This may be one of the single most important skills in entrepreneurship as you bring others along on your vision to build your dream. It’s worth investing in! If it’s a long road for you, remember how beneficial it will be for your business to create a super-power from communicating well to any audience in any context and mode.

Before you work on "communication," I'd work on your ability to self regulate. It's absolutely true that you might need help sharpening your selling skills, or sharing your vision. But most breakdowns are not due to an inability to say the write thing, but to be able to say it from the right emotional state. If you're frustrated and annoyed, too nervous about making someone mad to hold them accountable, struggling to say things clearly because of the potential push-back, learning better ways to say things won't actually make anything better. People who have the right mindset tend to find the right words. Start there. (EQ classes are essentially about self-regulation and communication. @JulesWilhelm does the best ones I've found.)

Look at other people who are talking or conversing in a group and see yourself and ask what is it that holds you back talking like them. It is not just capability development. That you can get anywhere via online or face to face learning. But ask yourself do you have the intention to become like them. Once you have that, enjoy the process of learning. Coz if you don't enjoy the process, the destiny to become a great communicator will not become a reality.

Communication skill is very important and being an entrepreneur it is much more important to have good communication skills be it with your co workers or your clients.
