What employers do is not in your control but your communication skills are. For negotiating compensation or advancement, you must listen well, speak with confidence, justify your requests, and talk in language employers use. Take charge of what you control. Do research, network, practice, hire a coach. A good one will help you with these things and also ask you to practice with others. That is so you become adept at conversation with different people and different interests, as well as get used to having those words in your mouth. When you can hear an employer's priorities and are confident talking about your contributions and reasons for asking in language employers understand, you'll have no problem communicating at the negotiating table.
