What do you do if your coaching and mentoring programs lack effective leadership?

A SWOT analysis is beneficial because it provides a structured framework for evaluating the current state of leadership within coaching and mentoring programs. If effective leadership is lacking, it's important to address the root cause(s) promptly. Start by assessing the current leadership structures and identifying areas for improvement. Encourage open communication channels where team members can express concerns and offer suggestions. Invest in leadership development programs to help develop skills and empower leaders to inspire and guide effectively (Incorporate self-leadership training as great leadership always begins with self). Encourage a culture of accountability, where leaders are held responsible for their actions and decisions.

It depends how much time and freedom you have as a coach. But I would conduct assessment through the eyes of the employees those leaders are leading. It would be either a questionnaire (faster and takes shorter time) or 15 minute long 1:1 with 3-5 people (this I do when I work for the company full-time). Why? if we are fixing only the hole in the roof of the house the water-damage might still fester. You need to fix the roof, but also make sure that the damage the hole in the roof has one is also addressed properly. There is no leader without a team.

Agree…evaluate the situation at hand, productivity in comparison with company’s goal then initiate interaction with the most valuable asset…the employees to determine way forward in turning around operations.

Consistently assess your progress and make necessary changes to ensure you stay on track with your ultimate objectives.

Ideally, once you have identified skills gaps within your leadership team, you are able to empower them with continuous learning and education. Leaders and managers should strive to foster a culture of belonging, inclusivity and performance that promotes everyone's unique contribution. identify the values that you'd like your leaders to promote and emphasize, this will set the tone for the rest of the teams. Leaders and managers also have unique opportunities to role-model inclusive behaviors to make sure performance isn't negatively impacted and teams are supported.

Monitoring sounds very harsh in the world of coaching, it does not really go with the essence of it. In coaching the responsibility is on the coachee and if that is not established you can't call it a classical coaching in my eyes. I'd say instead that follow the progress, open your eyes and ears and truly listen and see how is the program going. Talk with people, ask them the right questions and you will know.

Kindly understand that you are addressing competency gaps at the leadership level. Mere learning interventions are not going to cut it. The issue could be related to organisational culture. This calls for a thorough study before charting out any action plan.
