What do you do if your classroom is plagued with behavioral issues and you're a teacher?

In addition to those already mentioned, consider other child, teacher, and environmental factors that may influence behaviors like sensory differences, attention and focus, distractibility, emotion regulation challenges, and learning differences that make it challenging for students to participate in the general education setting. Remember behavior is communication and we must seek first to understand what the student is communicating through their behaviors and then figure out how to better meet their needs through universally designed environments and evidence based teaching practices.

Before resorting to screaming and tearing your hair out, try to understand why the student is engaging in the problematic behavior. They may be dealing with problems at home, frustration with a class activity or assignment, or they simply just want attention. Show empathy and be an active listener-- this will build trust between you and your students!

Individuals can set the culture of the classroom based on shared values and consistency of expectations. Teachers must lead the students to a shared contract of what good learning habits are that are based on shared and mutual respect. However, teachers then have to be insistent, consistent and persistent in application of these expectations. The wider picture is that leaders must also have shared their expectations about what good learning habits are with all staff. It is far better for there to be school wide expectations with mutual accountability than to expect staff to go it alone.

Have a set of class rules present in the classroom, and establish these at the beginning of the school year. Perhaps have them take a copy of the rules home to read with their parents, and have them, both the parents and the student, sign, date, and return the form to you. This will show that they took the time to read the rules, and ensures that they will be taken seriously should they be breached. Also make sure students are aware of any consequences that will result from breaking the rules, depending on the severity of the offence.

Agree! ‘Attention seeking behaviour is connection seeking behaviour’ Sometimes the strategy of praising good behaviour can lead to a student having something to mock so it isn’t bullet proof. If the student showing the attention seeking behaviour can be brought to understand the impact of their behaviour on the learning of others and themselves and make a commitment to improve which is monitored that is ideal. It is also good if students discuss and express written commitment to a code of conduct which they’ve had a role in producing.

As educators, it's essential to reflect on our own practices and consider how we are managing our classrooms. Effective communication, clear expectations, and a supportive learning environment are crucial for fostering positive student behavior. Before involving students in collaborative problem-solving, it's important for teachers to assess their own teaching methods and classroom management strategies. By setting a strong foundation through effective leadership and clear communication, teachers can create an environment where students feel empowered to participate in finding solutions while also taking responsibility for their actions. Self-reflection is key component of effective teaching and classroom management.

Multidisciplinary efforts are almost always more effective in problem solving. Each team member has a unique set of skills and experience to bring to the table. And teachers need to feel like they’re part of the group effort and not stranded alone in their classroom
