What do you do if your classroom discussions lack logical reasoning?

During our training and learning tenure, i feel health care professionals believe in a self written discourse where we separate science and philosophy, some time it leads us to an emptiness in mind while we are engaged with a cohort of learners waiting to listen from you continuously. In my opinion, its better to prepare for such situation beforehand by blending science and philosophy, engage audience with engagement techniques, tell them a story , thus they are engaged and you are relaxed. Meanwhile, Your brain, will automatically process the information required to be logical in debate or a lecture.

try to use language that students can understand, for example, slow down on the technical jargon and introduce real-life scenarios that students can relate to in your discussions. Focus on your questioning techniques and have easy starter questions like "What evidence supports this view?". Accept wrong answers and turn them into proactive and meaningful discussions. And finally, make it fun, its easier to learn when you are relaxed.

Challenge students with questions that require deeper analysis, and foster a classroom culture where curiosity and questioning are celebrated. Sometimes all students need is someone to point them in the right direction. Demonstrating the standard helps students visualize what success looks like and enables them to set realistic targets for themselves. I find that if you give them a clinical situation to find solutions make them feel more confident and be able to work as a team.

When the class is disturbed or has lost focus, discussion is often left to the top 5% of students by the group and the group follows the lead of these top 5%.When we select a student and ask the student to provide his/her personal viewpoint , it often makes others attentive and gives a new direction for discusssion.Active intervention at times could be beneficial in case of Group Dynamics.

In such a situation I make a rule that in each group discussion each student has to contribute to the discussion without which the discussion won’t end. Let each student feel his voice is special break him out of the shell and we will find out logic will come out from the least expected students.

De hecho me parece un punto muy interesante, cuando tienes una clase en la que se está viendo una dinámica de grupo que está proponiendo a un líder, si no analizas tu situación podría llegar un punto en el que la personas elegida por el grupo llegaría a tener mayor jerarquía que tú. Es por lo tanto importante analizar la dinámica del grupo para apaciguar o al menos predecir que movimientos de este tipo se lleven a cabo.

When teaching groups, the very first stage is to create a safe atmosphere. This is applicable to all learning, in classrooms as well as in companies and organizations. A safe atmosphere is characterized by mutual respect and clear rules for what that means. Talk it through and create a charter that everyone adds to and agrees upon, preferably in writing. The next stage is to have moderators present in every group. This role can rotate - the result is that everyone is at some point responsible for giving everyone a space to share perspectives. Finally, give at least one person in every group the role of "the critical thinker" - someone who challenges all concepts. This role too should rotate. Now, to enjoy the interesting conversations!

Where students are able to pause and think about what was said by their peers, and how they really feel about those ideas. Utilizing many different avenues for reflection is vital to ensuring all students get what they need from the practice. This could include smaller group discussion, thought mapping, creating pro/con lists, focusing on one argument and writing the reasons they agree or disagree with further discussion as to why they have that view. These reflection practices are an important skill for students to develop.

Visual aids to promote discussion such as charts and graphs allow students to formulate their answers. I teach Cyber Security students and find that the best discussions/arguments come from ethical issues, a class will have a range of ethics and I have had some very heated but fun discussions with students. Depending on what you teach the resources will change, but they joined your course for a reason, use as many resources as you can and promote their research skill by allowing them to to add to your pot of shared resources, that way students take ownership of a discussion and will give more.

I would suggest a debating session since it can be a powerful tool for developing logical reasoning in class for several reasons. Firstly, it requires students to critically analyze and evaluate arguments presented by both themselves and their peers. This process fosters the ability to identify logical fallacies, inconsistencies, and weaknesses in arguments, promoting higher-order thinking skills. Secondly, participating in debates encourages students to construct coherent and persuasive arguments supported by evidence and reasoning, honing their ability to formulate logical connections between ideas and effectively communicate them to others.

Start each day by giving kids logic puzzles or logic questions. KenKen is a number game that kids can access. Word problems lend themselves: on a farm there I are goats, chickens, and cows. If there are 36 legs, how many different combinations? There are clue logic games, classifying activities, STEM projects. So many ways to teach logic in fun ways.
