What do you do if your civil engineering skills become outdated?

One thing I found helpful when I was starting to build my skills portfolio was searching the Job descriptions of the Roles I desired to work on and then assessing their required key skills with what I have. A key thing here is to maintain a positive mindset and be honest with yourself.

For civil engineers, staying up-to-date and expanding their knowledge is crucial. Industry publications, such as Civil Engineering Magazine or the Journal of Structural Engineering, provide valuable insights into current trends and best practices. Attending conferences like the annual ASCE event or the International Conference on Sustainable Infrastructure offers opportunities for networking and learning from experts. Virtual resources like webinars, podcasts, and online forums are also beneficial. Professional organizations like ASCE and ICE offer memberships providing exclusive content and networking platforms. Social media, particularly LinkedIn, facilitates connections with professionals and access to industry news.

Recognising that your current skills are outdated is the first step in addressing the problem. Given that the basic theories of engineering is unlikely to change with time, it is how these theories are applied to modern day problems and the emerging technologies that one needs to catch up with. A few steps to addressing issues of outdated skills set. 1. Understand the gap 2. Commit to continuous professional development. Most engineering bodies like the IStructE and ICE encourages members to stay up to date and have various webinars to ensure that. 3. Engage with others in the industry to keep abreast of emerging technologies on platforms like LinkedIn. 4. Put in the effort to stay updated.

Typically they are?things that you created, built, designed, sold or initiated. It is not the same as responsibilities that come under a job description, as these remain fixed no matter who is employed in the post. An achievement is unique to your experience and tells the employer that you can deliver.

This is where we let ourselves down sometimes. People working with a company for a very long time, tend to only be exposed to the way their Company do things - 'business-as-usual'. We should reach out to our peers in other companies and industries (consultants, Councils, authorities, developers). This is how you can truly gain a current perspective on what's going on in our industry. Find forums where we can all come together and share ideas and learn from each other.

These measures will help you maintain your skills relevant in the dynamic field of civil engineering.

I'm outdated, you are outdated and every Civil Engineer is outdated! ? Witnessing the uptrend caused by AI in this Modern Information age, there is a ton of knowledge available out there in the form of articles, blogs and other content formats. ? To stay away from becoming an outdated Civil Engineer, we'll have to learn about: - Evolving Construction technologies - Construction products - Construction techniques - AI based predictive Construction tools/ software, etc. ? Learning could be easy but staying updated and ahead would need another step, which is implementing the learnings to witness the evolution of Construction sites' progress. ? The only key is to learn and implement, every single day!

One of the key areas to search for relevant and on demand skills is freelancing sites. For example, from the tasks listed, you can analyze the key skills they need, the software used, the different client needs/specifications and how they'd want them delivered.

Practical live sessions are the best for refreshing your skills. The goal is to focus on understanding how Top experts in your niche arrive at decisions rather than the decision itself. How do I apply tool x to get results Y We should focus on workshops that teach the how.

Invest your time, your effort in what you really like. Keep yourself on track what is happening around you, in regards of what other skills are required. And most important: believe in yourself.

Never be too tired to learn new methods even if it means going back to the books. The richest men we have today in the industry are so, as they never stopped researching, expanding their knowledge and determining new effective methods to achieve their goals.

One of my messages to everyone especially for the professionals joining the industry is ALWAYS UPDATE YOURSELF. You can enrol for a course and not learn everything. But there's always one thing U take home which if horned well will take to the highest level. So many people tend to wait to be trained instead of getting themselves trained.

Research reputable and current mini-courses. Many are found online and are self-paced. Once you complete the course, look for interactive workshops where real-world examples are used to put this theory to practice. Working through problems in a group is one of the most effective ways to apply and retain new knowledge.

Don't be afraid to share your ideas and solutions with others. Post some of your workings or case studies. The vast majority of engineering professionals are supportive and curious too! If there are new processes and workflows, they may not be perfect but if we all learn and critique as a group, we will all upskill together.

For you to develop, you must be willing to embrace feedback. Sometimes emvracing feedback means accepting to challenge what you actually thought was good. Further, consider seeking feedback from people two steps ahead of you. Make it a video call or a meeting. The key is to understand their thought process.

The need for feedback can never be overemphasised. No matter what you do, once someone makes an observation about you. You will by rule of thumb tend to ask yourself IS HE/SHE RIGHT ABOUT ME? Now that pushes your psychological to take a split second look into the observation. Now that right there's the power of feedback.

I pride myself to be the perpetual learner and I wouldn't stop learning new skillsets and ideas. So my skills getting outdated would be pretty rare, or if I decided to stop learning. Always be excited to learn new things, new ideas, new practices. you can never go wrong.

Deliberate practice. You must keep pushing your abilities by engaging in projects that challenge your current status. Look for projects with different needs outside what you do regularly and comfortably

Re-evaluate, study and apply. I think just maintain a a flexible mindset, willing to learn, unlearn and re-learn. It is also important to not forget the end goal is to deliver a quality product or service and not a method.

Learning and living should never in any sentence be separated. If U ain't learning to live then you will live to learn. There's nothing that we are doing that isn't an aftermath of learning. I mean nothing. #IStandToBeCorrected

Keep looking for updating your knowledge and abilities in order to be on top of your game. Nowadays the technology is the key factor of every field on engineering, so use it in your favor. Take a multidisciplinary skilled professional to go on in your own field.
