I am sharing my experiences regarding affordable housing in India. Having worked as a senior town planner for various cities, it became evident that - Houseless people in the city are not Houseless in their native. Thing is they cannot afford to have a home in the city where they have arrived to earn a living. The primary reason - the high prices of the land in the city areas. It takes up to 70 to 80%of the project cost. Other project components take up the rest of the costing. Currently, most of the affordable housing societies are proposed on govt land. Hence, first focus should be on making land affordable and available. Unless there is available affordable land, the idea of affordable housing will never be that successful in India.
