There are pros and cons of searching in company vs. outside roles, but as a starting point, it's always worthwhile to look at both. One concern of looking in-house is that the probability that word will get back to your current boss is higher and if that relationship is already fragile, this will likely make it worse. It also depends on the size of the company, as it's easier to be discreet within larger companies.
