What do you do if your business strategies are not yielding desired results?

Dealing with business challenges is like sailing in a storm. From my experience, using data to understand and tackle these obstacles is key. Find answers to : -Are sales down across the board or a specific product? -Is customer service swamped? -Did customer needs change? -Did a competitor swoop in? Asking right questions are the compass guiding through troubled waters. Market research and trying out different things, like A/B testing, have really helped me, especially when the market keeps changing. Being able to change and adapt is super important to keep going When facing challenges, analyze data, explore new ideas, and adapt strategies. Also, seek expert advice and adjust goals to meet changing market demands.

When business strategies aren't meeting expectations, consider two pivotal actions: Diagnose the Issue: Determine whether the shortfall stems from the strategy itself or its execution. This entails assessing market feedback, evaluating internal processes, and verifying strategic alignment with evolving market conditions. Adjust and Iterate: Based on your findings, make necessary adjustments. If the strategy is at fault, revisit and possibly overhaul your business approach, including market positioning and value propositions. If the execution is lacking, enhance operational effectiveness or optimize resource deployment. Continually track progress. This dynamic approach ensures your business remains resilient for long-term success.

Si tu estrategia de negocio no da los resultados esperados, primero identifica tus paradigmas limitantes, hay creencias que como equipo pueden estar limitando tu crecimiento. Seguido a esto, reconoce el verdadero "job" que resuelven tus negocios. Conoce profundamente a tus clientes: sus necesidades, motivaciones y cómo tus servicios o productos encajan en su vida. Define claramente los beneficios y el valor único que ofreces, esto te ayudará a destacarte y ser relevante en el mercado. Recuerda, la clave está en adaptarse, innovar y siempre mantenerse alineado con lo que realmente tus clientes valoran. The first and foremost thing to remember is that it's perfectly okay to not reach your goals. The best companies deviate from their goals from time to time. Goals are our mental projection into the future; they are based on our faith much more than on facts. As Warren Buffett said, there are no facts about the future. The fact that a company fails to achieve a goal is just information for analysis and reflection.

The "5 Why" methodology can help you get to the root cause of deviation from strategic goals. The key is to be honest with yourself when asking these questions and to find the answers even if they may hurt or upset someone.

It may come as a surprise to some but placing to much emphasis on data that is historical can directly lead to strategies that are ineffective. Strategy is about making choices to win in an uncertain future - a future where the past is perhaps no longer relevant and not a predictor of customer needs and success.

Data -- both qualitative and quantitative -- is how you infuse your strategy with informed decision making. Your entire strategic framework is compromised if you have holes in your ability to gather and/or understand relevant data input. You can't manager what you don't measure.

When working with the team use them to challenge the various assumptions made that supported the original strategy. If a strategy is failing it's quite possible that what needed to be true to satisfy key assumptions is in fact not holding up. I then advise teams to assess the original assumptions, identify which aren't holding true and why. Then work on adjusting the strategy and updating the key assumptions. This is why it's helpful to approach strategy as an exercise that is iterative.

Los síntomas que observamos suelen ser la punta del iceberg. Si nos enfocamos solo en ellos, implementaremos soluciones temporales que no abordan los problemas fundamentales. Una vez identificadas las causas raíz, podremos ajustar tácticas de manera efectiva y duradera.

Like with many things, it’s important to accept when a strategy doesn’t work. Make the necessary adjustments, then move on. Despite all the research and backing you might have, strategies are, by nature, predictive. It’s important to hold onto ideas and solutions with conviction, but always hold them loosely. Just because something worked before, doesn’t mean it is guaranteed to work again — situations change and conditions are always different. Be prepared to learn and iterate.

Después de ajustar las estrategias, es fundamental monitorear de cerca su progreso. Establecer indicadores clave de rendimiento (KPIs) nos permitirá rastrear la efectividad de cada cambio implementado. No basta con aplicar nuevos enfoques. Debemos revisar regularmente las métricas para determinar si los ajustes funcionan o se necesitan más cambios. Una estrategia es algo vivo que puede cambiar. El monitoreo constante es esencial. Sólo así podremos identificar oportunamente qué está funcionando y qué requiere más ajustes. De lo contrario, corremos el riesgo de seguir invirtiendo tiempo y recursos en tácticas infructuosas. Es crucial mantenerse alerta y ágil. El mercado y las necesidades de los clientes evolucionan rápidamente.

Have your strategies regularly analyzed by customers. Set up an advisory board with external experts for this purpose. If you invite your customers to play an active role in shaping your company, you will earn the trust of your target group through this authenticity and transparency. Human and approachable, instead of supernatural and larger than life. Many companies have grown much faster with this approach than those that stick to old MBA principles.

Don't underestimate the needs for communication. Execution on strategy is often an exercise in Change Management. Change management requires effective communication up and down the organization. Often a strategy will fail in small or large part due to lack of communications and support over the longer term. Be wary of the leaders who develop a new strategy, communicate it once during a town hall or corporate event and then you never hear from them again. These almost always fail or fail to deliver on the expectations of the new strategy.

My go-to tools, more often than not, are the PESTEL and McKinsey's 7S models, which offer a detailed and holistic perspective, thereby facilitating an optimized strategy formulation process.
