What do you do if your boss's expectations in logistics management are unrealistic?

En logística todo se puede... Pero todo cuesta!!! Y ahí encontramos diferencias entre las expectativas de nuestros jefes (la mayoría de casos gerentes generales) quienes quieren la mejor red de valor con muy baja (a veces muy, muy baja) inversión. Nuestro deber como gerentes de cadena de abastecimiento es modelar diferentes redes teniendo en cuenta sus ciclos, costos, niveles de servicio, factores externos, entre otros, y plantearlos a la dirección general basados en datos. Eso presenta un panorama completo y realista que no puede ser resistido. ... claro que puedo poner tu producto en la estación espacial internacional, pero no con el costo de un flete local...

Todo objetivo, meta es una expectativa a cumplir, hacia eso debe apuntar todo el equipo. ?Que pasa cuando vemos que esta expectativa no se ajusta a la realidad?, debemos presentar la estrategia y exponerla para que en debate se revisen los pro y contra de conseguir los resultados, esto con la finalidad de que en debate se transparente los datos, tendencias, fortalezas y debilidades y llegar a una conclusión de equipo. Esta práctica hará que en el camino de buscar resultados no caigamos en actitudes negativas y menos frustrantes.

In practice, addressing the concern involves conducting a feasibility study on the flow of goods, defining the problem and or opportunity, establishing the objectives of the study, describing the product offerings and how it be delivered timely and completely, presenting the correct data and right assumption, performing data analysis, and introducing findings, conclusion, and recommendation.

Pour évaluer la réalité des attentes de mon patron en gestion logistique, j'analyserais les ressources disponibles, les capacités opérationnelles, les contraintes externes et le historique des performances. J'identifierais également les risques potentiels. Cette évaluation me permettrait d'offrir une perspective réaliste et d'ajuster les attentes si nécessaire, favorisant ainsi une gestion logistique plus efficace.

One thing I found helpful is too assess the expectations and the timeline. If in looking at the data and amount of time seems unrealistic I will first seek support and then I will diplomatically have a meeting with my boss and express my concerns and data and provide an alternative solution that might work to the best interest of the company. If this does not work then I will consult with more experienced people within the organization to get input on how to managed my expectation and proceed.

Primero reconocer que toda meta tiene su cuota de exigencia y sacrificio, llegar a un objetivo es mejorar nuestra situación, no quedarnos donde estábamos, con esta actitud positiva y asertiva buscar una reunión con presentación de resultados y tendencias y mostrar cual es el mejor escenario para conseguir las expectativas propuestas. No basta con indicar que las expectativas no son reales, debemos mostrar nuestra mejor opción para llegar al mejor resultado y cuanto de diferencia hay con el propuesto. La actitud es lo que cuenta con mayor razón si mostramos nuestra mejor disposición a lograr algo superior. No puede haber frustración ante un diálogo franco y abierto en donde se compromete el mayor esfuerzo.

After re-educating myself, it is now time to have the honest discussion and explain the path to achieving their expectation and stay inline with the company's goals. When dealing with a boss that maybe doesn't have a logistical mindset, this is when you have to think about your audience and explain the process in a way they will understand without coming across as if you are talking down to them. This is also a great opportunity to explain the hurdles to overcome and possibly motivate them to allocate resources that will help the process overcome the hurdles easier.

Always approach a situation with multiple solutions, starting out with what you think would be the best longer term solution. It is also important you have the details like manpower, financial, time impacts.

It's imperative that everyone understands the constraints that are present logistically. Once this understanding is established everyone can have realistic expectations.

No basta con hacer un seguimiento a los planes para ver como no llegamos o nos vamos alejando de las expectativas superiores. La revisión semanal, quincenal, mensual según el periodo que se acomode tendra razon de ser si es para ajustar las acciones y encaminar resultados. Otro, el revisar con periodicidad resultados nos lleva a ver tendencias del negocio, gran oportunidad para utilizar los recursos que tenemos. El mostrar el comportamiento de nuestras acciones a todo el equipo y Jefe superior nos permite involucrar a todos y hacerlos partícipes de lo que juntos podemos conseguir.
