There is an obvious solution when your boss is a less-than-stellar communicator. This tactic may not be direclty addressed in any job description. Rather, it is one of those obscure nuances that exists when working in a team. One solution is that you can step up your own communication channels and fill in the gaps. If your boss is unclear, learn to be more clear. If your boss is unresponsive, be more responsive. If your boss is too nosy, be more transactional. In other words, you can take the initiative to provide the things that you think are missing—it's called leadership!

It's also important to establish clear boundaries and expectations for communication. Boss's can be intimidating and the last thing we want to do is get on their bad side. I have never met a higher up that has not been open and receptive to me sharing my communication concerns. I have always been able to approach my boss (or their boss even) openly and say something along the lines of " If you have a moment or two sometime this week to speak to me, I would appreciate it." This always opens up the path to communication. Believe me, your boss want's to know if there is something that needs addressing. More often than not, we make these conversations harder than they have to be when a simple "I really need some guidance" or "The team could benefit from __". etc..
