Changing roles and responsibilities comes with certain trepidation and nervousness. But, we have two choices: we can hide from the change or embrace it as an opportunity to continue to develop ourselves. When I began my first job, I was out of my element. Formal education hadn't prepared me to run a 70-person housekeeping department. I didn't have any training on using chemicals, scheduling, or evaluating performance. I felt inadequate and out of place. I reached out to a friend who gave me some advice: “Look for the ‘Do?a’ of the department,” he told me. The do?a is the informal leader of a group. If you work well with him or her, they will teach you your role. It's true and it worked.
