What do you do if your boss is not providing feedback to improve your performance?

Be proactive and ask for feedback especially after your have completed a project. Most to almost all leaders I have came across with are very generous in providing that to help juniors level up. They may overlook in providing if it is via a form or email, so sending 1-3 reminders to get them to help you with it should help. Another way is to do it F2F basis when you have meetings with them, best to catch up during your periodic 1-1 sessions.

Its a usual human tendency to believe that a person at a higher hierarchical level is always perfect and ideal. We often say "(S)he's the boss, she should do this, should do that". This kind of expectations of ideal behavior from our boss is the root cause of many problems. Let's start by understanding, (s)he's a human too, just like you. There a lot of things behind the scenes happening in anyone's life which we will not necessary see. Moreover, our boss has a boss to serve too. Our skip level leadership also affects a lot many things which boils down to us in the end. Now, this may or may not be true in all cases but this perspective really would first give you peace before you start introspecting you or your boss.

You should be capable enough to identify your loop holes in the code. Self criticism is best and often leads to perfection. Try to engage with other developers as well to know their perspective, and optimise it further. Remember, If you depend on others to find faults for you then you never grow as a professional. Always strive hard to get the most optimal solution after developing the brute force solution. This is how I worked and learn day by day.

One of the best ways to address the issue is to set a 1-1 with your boss and voice your concerns and stating why feedback is important to you. It's better to get things clarified than have a preconceived notion.

First, I would start with ensuring that you've made yourself seem open to feedback and not made it tough to give. Secondly, I would ensure that you've asked for it at least once before trying to go down the rabbit hole of why you're not getting it. If your boss is less comfortable in potential conflict, asking the first time might be just the thing to start the conversation in a positive way. Thirdly, if you've already gotten some type of feedback and it wasn't positive, then there's always a chance that it's just an avoidance technique and they're actively trying to work you out. The main paint is that open communication goes both ways. If you aren't getting the feedback you need or crave to grow, look at what you can do first.

I would always look for feedback from other people, preferably my peers. In many organizations, the manager is not involved in the daily work, which makes it hard for them to give feedback. Seek Feedback from others: Don't limit yourself to just your boss. Colleagues, mentors, or other supervisors can also provide valuable insights. They might offer perspectives on your work that you hadn't considered.

Seeking feedback from others is healthy, but should be used with caution. If you're very self aware and seeking feedback from others to truly grow, great. But if you seek feedback from people without the experience or care to give you tough feedback when you need it, you're only creating an echo chamber that's more about boosting your ego than it is learning and growing from real feedback.

Your surroundings are filled with a diverse set of people with different experiences and perspectives. Why not leverage this? feedback can come from any level and peer. This may not need to be technical feedback but can also be in the form of problem solving approach or mindfulness or tact or communication improvements.

Start by listing out your ideas which have a positive impact on your team/organisation. Pick the top three which are most feasible in said time frame and create an implementation plan around it. Do make it a point to communicate this initiative to your boss for added traction and motivation.

Be proactive in seeking feedback because that is the only way you would know how others perceive you in the system. Also keep introspecting into yourself to identify possible areas of improvement. Correlate your observations with others feedback and find opportunities of improvement or modifications to your behaviours which would help you to become a better person, leader etc. When you seek feedback, if you are not getting it from your boss.. be persistent and disciplined on seeking the same repeatedly. Since it is his duty, he will oblige for sure. Be sincere to spend time on it and followup with your boss, suggest improvement methods and seek help to make corrections (if any). This would improve his commitment to providing feedback.
