What do you do if your boss in media sales is difficult to communicate with?

Always remember your Boss is most likely to be the person who interviewed you, liked your profile & agreed to go ahead with you as a resource in his team to achieve his own targets. If you’re finding communicating with him difficult then it’s an alarming situation. Immediately access the gap areas which could be: 1. Both of you are located remotely. 2. Boss has too much to handle. 3. Time match constraint. 4. Communication style difference. 5. Ego issues. 6. Avoiding interaction due to fear of getting reviewed or evaluated. All such factors need to be addressed as if you stop communicating with your supervisor then you are creating a road block for yourself by not contributing in the organisational growth.

In my experience, it’s important to assume positive intent. BUT remember there is a finish line to positive intent and then it’s time to set boundaries.

Plan your meetings when you and your boss present together. Know who speaks when. Plan a ‘signal’ it add color, but not seem like you and your leader haven’t practiced ‘in sync’

If a person is at a senior position then he/she must have done something right to attain that level. It could be the experience, achievements, studies, networking or mixed of all. Active listening would only help you to understand his perspective & align yourself with overall company objectives. It will show that you respect his learning & are willing to adapt as per organisational requirements. Once you become a boss then you too would expect similar traits from your team.

Always follow up with an email. You never want it to become a she said/he said situation. An email recap, to be forwarded later is needed, protects.

Always be honest when providing feedback and make sure you give it in a timely fashion. It's important to provide both positive and sometimes constructive feedback.

Tell that boss what frustrates you, in a communication that a) doesn’t embarrass your boss or cause defensiveness, b) hold them accountable for crossing that boundary. Never humiliate, never put in a corner in front of other direct reports.
