What do you do if your boss is hindering your career growth?

Performing an honest assessment of your performance and fit within the organization is crucial in trying to determine who is ultimately responsible for "your" lack of growth in "your" career. "Your" is the critical word in all of this as you own your career and not your boss. In assessing your performance, it is important to evaluate the following: 1. Am I performing work at the level requested and in a way that is harmonious within the organization? 2. Does a growth path actually exist within the department or organization for my career? 3. Have I added enough supporters within the department and company to share positive feedback with my leaders? If all of these question are positive, then proceed to pushing the initiative!!

An open dialog is important to find out the reasons. Because the spectrum is broad and ranges from "Your boss needs you and doesn't want to let you go" to "Your boss doesn't even realize that he is hindering your career" to "Your boss simply doesn't like you." All of these reasons require completely different treatment. Talk about it without getting emotional. Because emotions can blur your sight and make it hard to analyze what the real reason is. Once you've analyzed it and figured it out, you can make a plan for the next steps. But what is not said can lead to misunderstandings. Our own perception can be completely different from that of other people. Keep that in mind.

I normally start out from a positive position, as is recommended in this article - but, if your boss is toxic or actively thwarting your aspirations, then report your experience to HR and get ready to make a job change internally or externally. Life is too short to try to change someone, and trying to please someone who’s shown they can’t be trusted with your best interests is a recipe for burnout and diminished self confidence and esteem. If however you can uncover through open conversation what’s behind you manager’s behaviour - perhaps your role is hard to fill or they’re worried how your advancement may impact the team or the function of your department - then you can show understanding and flexibility while still pursuing your goals.

Those that are successful in their careers consistently engage in open dialogue with leaders in the organization. After having reflected on your place in the organization and aligned it with your ambitions, it is important to consider the following: 1. Openly discuss where you believe the next steps of your career should be and accept feedback on how you may achieve it. 2. Provide a plan on how you wish to achieve your goal and ask for guidance in the process. 3. Show a willingness to accept recommendations that may alter from the path you have expressed. These are ways to show the leader that you own your career and wish for support. This can open opportunities. In the end, we are the ones responsible for our career.

Extensive internal networks are critically important to creating visibility within your organization. There are three methods which can be helpful in building your internal network. 1. Build mentoring relationships in several directions. Of course, mentoring is a two way street as it involves cooperation from both the mentor and mentee, but on top of that, having both roles within the organization can be helpful (being both a Mentor and Mentee). 2. Develop strong relationships with business partners who can attest to your capabilities and motivation. 3. Take on/create opportunities that allow you to work with leaders which you would not normally have the chance to work with. These methods build a wide support base for career growth.

Proactive feedback looking is necessary in cultivating of continues improvement. By requesting experiences from a differing extend of colleagues, counting peers, subordinates, and superiors, we pick up a well-rounded understanding of our qualities and fields for enhancement. This 360-degree viewpoint can not only complement our manager's feedback but also give valuable direction that moves us forward, especially in intense and dynamic work situations. It is not good to spend your time at work with a bitter heart. So check early on which of the two extreme options your heart is more likely to accept: 1. you stay in the company/department, even if your career is slowed down. 2. you look for a new company/department. Why do I consider these extreme options first? It is good to know your heart before making a detailed, elaborate plan with many options. So there may be many options in between, all of which you should of course consider. And in the end: maybe you don't want to leave because you want to learn as much as possible - just think of it as your training years. Your heart will accept it. Or your heart won't accept it. Keep your eyes open for the other extreme. A job is not a marriage.

Another pitfall is ensuring employees feel empowered and have clarity on responsibilities/deadlines without you physically being there.
