When we work together, this is bound to happen. However, the key in the situation, is to remain absolutely calm and composed, throughout the conversation. We would not be able to solve the situation or problem at hand, if both of us show aggression. Next is listening to the perspective of the other person patiently. Please note "listening" and "patiently" are the key here. We also call this as "Active Listening". Now comes the point to express on the table, that both of us have the common objective to achieve. We are not running our independent agendas while working together. We have to effectively communicate that both of us have common intentions. This should ease the situation at hand and the discussion can continue objectively.

well, if the boss is getting defensive then that means he doesn't have much in hand. go for skip-level meetings. understand his limitations and either align your expectations (i.e. lower down) or help him succeed so that you both can succeed. Its all about understanding his limitations and aligning your expectations (either with boss or boss's boss)

Your boss is also human, we all have imperfect days. Be kind, always. If you are spoken to unkindly, it is wise to wait until the person has calmed down and go and ask them if they are ok and why they spoke to you that way. Perhaps it was a misunderstanding of their tone or a concern that wasn’t related to you. I find it helps to understand, even if the reason is because they were frustrated. And if it’s with you, it allows a chance to discuss your reasoning for behaviour and actions. And perhaps to agree what would work better the next time.

If you’ve usually not seen this side of your boss, then my assumption would lead to the fact they are probably feeling some sort of pressure and that this is more uncharacteristic of them. Be direct and courteous in your approach, to try and uncover why they are feeling this way. If you are in good standing with them then callout that things feel a bit off. This shows you have good emotional intelligence and hopefully the boss will reframe their defensive stance. If you don’t have much history with your manager then try breaking down the issue of contention and avoid any finger pointing, even if you are convinced you are right. Sometimes small misalignments can appear much bigger than they are.
