Change is inevitable. Technology disruption happens every other year which brings new perspectives and competitive benefits. It's quite possible that new technology may have some limitations which may hinder the algorithm development. Meanwhile, raising right technology concerns and till the technology originator resolves or comes up with solution to compensate the known limitations, we need embrace the change and seek for workaround for a while.

My experience with updating skills or learning new languages is like learn through collaborations/teams/groups. Actually, it will help to resolve common problems quickly, people will share their skills/knowledge/experience. Learning in group actually accelerate the learning process and gives the confidence. Learn and work as a team. Preferably, in-person/classroom learning/training will pace up the overall process. Give dedicated time, no part time, no breaks in between. And, hands-on experience is the most important of all. Without Hands-on experience, we will not be able to gain confidence at live project.

When it comes to rethink of design, i would probably go with following approach - 1. Check for same piece of code with different perspectives in terms of data structure and algorithms. 2. Thinking out of the box and check for possible solutions. 3. Brainstorm with the team and seek feedback on possible options and check if they can anticipate or foreseen something different. 4. Once possibilities identified, check for performance of the algorithms and also check results are not deviated post testing. 5. Rank all possible designs according to performance of the algorithms.
