What do you do if your airport faces a major operational crisis?

One thing I have found to be critical is not only having a documented plan but the actual exercise of that plan for those that do not operationally exercise those procedures on a regular basis. A plan is only as good as those that know thier role in the execution of it.

One thing that I found helpful for any major incident plan is practice through the use of table top exercises. Add in paper feeds as it progresses and this should demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of the plan whilst fostering creativity to deal with any aspects that may be have been missed in the planning stage

Every airport should have a crises management team ( emergency response system). These teams have well define procedures and 4rd parties incase emergency

The first step is activating the Emergency Response Plan, which includes mobilizing the Airport Command Post (ACP) to manage the situation. Ensuring the safety of passengers, staff, and flight crews is a top priority, often involving evacuations or shelter-in-place directives. Additionally, airport security, law enforcement, and emergency medical services are immediately notified. The situation is then assessed to determine its scope, affected areas, and necessary actions for mitigation.

First and most importantly. Identify the specific operational issues, such as staffing shortages, equipment failures, or logistical challenges.

Internal communication must be ensured with staff, airlines, and emergency services, while external communication involves informing passengers via public systems, apps, social media, SMS, and email alerts. Regular updates to the media through press releases and a designated spokesperson are also essential. All messages must be accurate and consistent. A feedback mechanism for passengers and post-crisis communication on recovery plans and preventive measures shall be in place.

Ensure that passengers are informed and assisted. Provide information on delays, cancellations, and alternative transportation. Work closely with airlines to manage flight schedules, rebook passengers, and minimize disruption.

Maintain passenger assistance and cargo management as much as possible. Sustain logistics and supply chain continuity. Implement technology and infrastructure backups. Collaborate with airline partners and external agencies to adjust flight schedules and coordinate recovery efforts.

In such situations, increased demand for resources like staff, equipment, facilities, and time, and mismanagement can worsen the crisis or delay recovery. For example: Weather management strategies include deploying snow removal crews, redirecting staff for passenger management amid flight cancellations, and prioritizing de-icing trucks and backup equipment to keep one runway open. Ice accumulation shuts other airport areas. De-icing fluid is replenished, and extra funding covers overtime and repairs.

Post-crisis recovery entails inspections, phased service restoration, resource allocation, and ongoing communication. Replenishing inventories and managing finances ensure operational continuity. Passenger compensation, monitoring for secondary issues, and engaging the local community rebuild public confidence, while post-crisis debriefs strengthen crisis management for the future.
