What do you do if your advanced network security skills are not getting noticed in the industry?

Build credibility by adding latest certifications to your profile in order to stay in tune with latest technological trends. I started my career with routing and switching but gradually moved to network security by taking up security roles. This enhanced my profile and gave me experience over a broad area of technologies. Gain experience in new technologies by going out of your usual comfort zone. Discuss the ongoing technical issues within your team to get better and wholistic understanding of any topic. Share knowledge by posting on LinkedIn and interacting with other people's posts by your comments.

If my advanced network security skills aren’t getting noticed, I'd focus on visibility and value demonstration. First, I’d build a strong personal brand—sharing insights, case studies, or solutions on platforms like LinkedIn, and engaging with industry discussions. Contributing to open-source projects or writing for cybersecurity blogs can also showcase expertise. Networking is key—attend conferences, webinars, and meetups to build connections. Additionally, seeking certifications or speaking at events helps solidify credibility. Ultimately, being proactive and creating value ensures that skills don’t go unnoticed.

Certs were great when few people held them. Today, as a hiring manager, folks applying with certs are a dime a dozen. Further, what does this really tell me about your abilities? I know you can learn, but I don't know if you can apply it for creative problem solving. Focus on sharing what you know via blogs, videos, social media, etc. Demonstrate first hand that you are good at creative problem solving. This will do far more to build your credibility than certs.

By establishing myself as a knowledgeable and active member of these communities, I can showcase my expertise and open doors to new opportunities.

Don't just "engage", help folks out! Everyone talks about news topics, the work of others, etc. There is not a lot of visibility there. Be perceived as someone that solves problems.

As someone that hires security people, I can tell you this is the most important thing you can do to get noticed. I can't call your current boss and ask them if you are a star. However, I can Google your name and see what work you have out there. If there is little to nothing, that resume goes to the bottom of the pile regardless of how many initials appear after the person's name. If however, I find blogs, videos, etc. demonstrating that you know how to solve problems, that's first hand proof that you are truly capable.
