"identify areas that need your attention" basically is translated to: where you have problems or limitations? is it money? is it time? is it features? is it capacity? Keep it simple: where you are, where you need to be, what things are a MUST what are preferred and what is luxury. This way in the new technology selection you have an easy checkbox, if it is too complicated or sophisticated it will probable lead to biased decisions.

IN our experience it′s always good to do 2 Point of View exercises. 1- the view from top leaders and researchers where you look for new tech and new models and influencers tell you what's good and what's not. 2- you inmediate surroundings reality view, in this one you identify what technologies would work in your city/area. Example: 2 years ago SLS was THE technology to go to, i had done all my research, tutorials, budget , etc etc. When i got to my inmediate surroundings PoinOfView.... DANGER. My country customs banned SLS powders unless you have a special permit, meaning still today you cant import metal powders via cargo... meaning SLS was NOT the choice for me, even if it lookes great in USA or Europe.

To "test" new tech that means some kind of investment (I.E: 1 new SLS printer), it is a great idea to take your first customers and outsource the production. Me franco take the client, and i just buy the pieces from someone else for this time, my winnings will be null or even negative BUT! and its a big BUT. You get to test you clienr, your product, your market, etc etc ... without actually spending 30k in something you still don′t know if its the fit for your business.
