What do you do if workplace safety measures are not being followed?

There is always a likelihood that work place safety measures are not followed as deemed necessary as per the HSE-MR. To react to such non-compliances, a number of safety tools are brought in practice. In my experience and career growth I have employed multiple techniques to enhance safety compliance:- 1. Close monitoring to identify non-compliance 2. Reactive actions to prevent this non-compliance and resume controls as recommended in RA or Safety Protocols. Reporting the non-compliance and action taken to management 3. Proactive actions to mitigate chances of similar non-compliances in future 4. Safety evaluation of the involved personnel 5. Assessing training or re-training requirements Consistent Efforts for continuous improvement.

Address non-compliance with workplace safety measures promptly by communicating, providing additional training if necessary, and implementing policy changes. Enforce safety protocols, involve supervisors if needed, and establish ongoing monitoring and improvement mechanisms to maintain a consistently safe work environment.

Consider a diagonal slice of the organisation and look to how the whole system is malfunctioning. Create a money story where the safety problem is defined as a monetary loss to leadership. Consider appropriate leverage points to initiate change within the system. Align safety to the real corporate outcomes of the company and demonstrate how productivity and sales are being affected by poor safety practice. Provide a diagnosis and holistic therapy for the whole organisation. Safety is not a separate component, it is part of the total complexity of the company and should be considered in every element of planning, design and implementation. Ensure that safety is factored in as a bottom line.

Sell the benefits of workplace safety to the employees and management. Ensure they are all trained to identify unsafe behaviors and ways of doings in the workplace. Use the things that matter most to them as motivation to get their buy-in. E.g, indicate how the company avoids production losses when workplace safety is a priority. Get employees excited and interested in a safe working place by coming up with initiatives like incentives for injury-free days, as they all want and need the money. Recognize and applaud good safety behavior of employees.

Have a conversation with a mindset in root cause analysis and management of change. When a non-compliance event occurs, whether it is regulatory or an internal process or best practice, it is easy to jump to assumptions. Approaching a discussion with empathy and understanding can go a long way. Sometimes it turns out the person is taking a shortcut or even trying to innovate. Responses like that may be internal motivators often considered “laziness” but it could also be pressure for management to get things done early and under budget, maybe with little to no training. Care and kindness can go a long way, but money still makes the world continue moving. If the base motivation is money on all sides, doing math on injury and fatalities helps.

In my experience, hierarchy of controls are the best way to resolve a situation as well to identify the right solutions. The way it is the best solution in finding the right resolve in risk assessments, it is practical in terms of finding the solutions.

I’ve experienced this at multiple companies and projects. It’s a shame that in today’s world, it’s still the dollar and schedule above workers lives. If employers would begin practicing safety instead or lip service safety, things would get better. For years I’ve heard talk of fines going to the employee who violates safety requirements. OSHA fines against employers, I understand the purpose and agree with it, but many times the employer may not be aware of employees independent act. Shouldn’t he pay for his actions?
