Stay updated with the latest photography trends, techniques, and business practices to keep improving your services.

Believe in your passion 100%. I was a succesful executive in the energy sector for 17years on international level, and I did not need to change my career but I did. I have never regretted. I took time to form myself as a portrait photographer and I have decided I was going to be THE PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER in Spain, not just A PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER. I was determined, comitted and worked hard. It's not enough to be creative. Before you attract a commission, people must know about you. Share your work. Design attractive flyers. Get them out there but don't annoy people with unsolicited emails!

Research, research, research. Think about what you are interested in specializing in, and what you will do to offer something unique within that genre. Photography is an oversaturated market so you need to stand out. Look for ways to get your work in front of people and pick their brains - run a survey in exchange for an entry into a prize draw, or seek out people you see as your ideal client and offer to buy them a coffee. Ask lots of questions about their needs, and how you can solve their problem. LISTEN - take notes and really hear exactly how they describe their pain points. Then use that language in your marketing copy so that you can appeal to clients who need the specific type of photography you are offering.

One of the biggest mistakes I’ve made is thinking that since I’m a photographer, people will flock to me for the services that I’m offering. Well, it took a while to understand that the business is different from the craft in itself, and it has to have a very well structured plan. Begin with an intensive marketing plan, refer to how other photographers in the world had done it. Don’t be afraid to expend some money on marketing! Ensure that you have a very clear portfolio which focuses on one niche, so that you gain an irrefutable recognition in the space. Also, network! Network! NETWORK!

Think very carefully before making the leap. It is essential to make the numbers work for you and not be driven by price alone. There are so many part time and hobbyist photographers around that the value of the profession is being eroded. It is impossible to compete on price with people who are doing it as a side hustle to simply fund their hobby. Under charging is not sustainable so if you don't have the skills to be able to deliver a quality portfolio and charge accordingly then don't waste your time.

Seek out examples of business plan templates and be thorough and detailed. Getting very clear on your target market is extremely important. You need to be clear and specific about exactly what you do, why you do it, and who your work is for in order to stand out in what is a very crowded market.

Don't forget to get liability insurance to protect yourself and your equipment. Taking care of the legal aspects can be tedious, but it's critical for operating a professional business.

Brand identity is very important... People need to start recognising your brand. You need Logos and colours that remain consistent. You need to have consistently in the look of your branding! This is something I didn't take very seriously until a little later in my life. I would always be changing colours and fonts and logos and it came difficult to see if all my work was from the same person. Make sure you and your brand are identifiable!

It's more than just your website, or social media, it encorporates who you are when on-shoot. Build a consistent personal brand to be a person they WANT to work with, rather than NEED to work with.

Having a brand identity is a MUST! This is one of the ways that can set up apart from the rest of the competition. Creating a clean and attractive aesthetic will bring the clients. As a photographer make sure that your website shows clean work and an attractive aesthetic. Make it yours!

Focus, Focus, Focus! Don't make the mistake of trying to be an photographer for all audiences. Do you like weddings? Become a perfect wedding photographer! Do you like working with tabletop photography? Become the best product photographer. The biggest challenge is to think that photos are always photos, regardless of what subjects you photograph.

Done is better than perfect. Do not drive yourself into analysis paralysis by trying to perfect things. You can make as many improvements over time as needed, but publish that website, create your portfolio and get your basic business infrastructure so you can start your marketing efforts as soon as possible.

I think determination is a key ingredient to photography success. Photography is an art, and like so many other art forms, it draws a lot of practitioners who want to make a living at it. Sheer determination is sometimes what drives some to success where others fail.

This is one of the big ones! You can NEVER stop learning! This is a field that is CONSTANTLY evolving and changing! There's always new tech and techniques on editing and equipment! You have to stay up to date! Just like Doctors do their CPD points... We should all stay informed and engaged in what's happening in the Industry!

There is always room to learn. Even the most professional photographers are learning something every day or even often. It is best to learn because of the technology changes and industry changes. Things change and rearrange. Its apart of the growth process to learn new things about what you are interested in.

Consider if you want to really turn a hobby and passion into a job. After determining that, really just running with it full force into the consumer market. Don’t wait for jobs to come to you. Seek them out, develop your skill and create the demand.

You must seriously consider if you wish to monetise your hobby - and if you decide to do so, make sure to find a new hobby that you can do for your own happiness as soon as possible!
