Progressive companies present challenging assignments to Interns that sometimes span multiple terms. Those companies are also looking for talent to solve operational or technical problems. Take one on!! Learn a process element of a unit operation. Talk to the most talented Operators. Figure out who the respected technology leaders might be and seek out an opportunity to be the ‘grunt’. One of our great successes was led by a talented rising senior who tested model coefficients of a polynomial predictor. They reverse engineered each coefficient using process data and regression analysis to unravel a control strategy left by an individual contributor SME who did not document work to ‘protect their interests’ over plant operations. Jump!
