Prior to making a switch full time data science and ML, I was working as a software developer writing general purpose data science tools and services that help data scientists derive insights from large volumes of data. A reasonable starting point for a software engineer would be to get involved in projects that build platforms for data scientists so that you learn, understand, know how data scientists work with data and turn that into actionable insights via a series of tasks ending up in insights. This knowledge needs to be applied where you work with data scientists and start helping them derive actionable insights via your platform. At this point you have already transitioned. All you need to do is gain experience.

2 Learn the fundamentals of data science

I used DataCamp to improve my python skills, that was the best platform, because it oblige you to practise after each video . and used Kaggle to learn about different predictive algorithms

The best place or courses to get started are all available in Coursera. I would recommend the Data science courses from Johns Hopkins as a very good starting point on Coursera. Data camp is a very useful practice environment. However, nothing replaces solving known competition projects on Kaggle and putting them up on Kaggle or GitHub. This ways you keep building a trail that at some point starts to look like a portfolio.

Data Science or ML doesn't exist without a domain after you have come across the basic courses in DS and ML on Coursera, I would pick a specialization that has broader applicability in a wide range of disciplines and industries. Once that is done, getting started with some courses on Coursera or other wise on some of the basic courses in that discipline, would be very helpful. Again once you go through the coursework you can get started with Kaggle problems in that domain beginning to build a trail of small projects which go into your portfolio.

One of the best ways to demonstrate your data science skills and knowledge is to build a portfolio of projects that showcase your work. You can use your own data, or find public datasets from sources like Kaggle, UCI Machine Learning Repository, or Google Dataset Search.
