There are loads of business courses, many fully-funded by local councils. They are a great way to make sure you're covering all the bases and have at least a basic plan in all areas of running a business. It's not too much of a reach from being a developer to put together a website or any other IT infrastructure you need, but the bigger question about what you put on your website is "why?" and that needs some marketing and target client sector strategy. If you know someone who runs a successful business, take them to the pub and talk to them (I did this and it was a great help).

Translating development skills into something you can make money from is the single hardest aspect of starting a business. Forget about the fun of solving problems and producing a great technical solution. That will come later. Start with who you will serve, what problem you will solve, and why they will pay you for it. It's all very well coming up with an idea that solves a real problem (this is a good start) but the person you're solving the problem must not only be able to afford to pay you for your solution, but they must be willing to pay. It's got to be so obvious that what you do is beneficial for them that they are willing to accept the pain of switching what they do to what you're giving them.

There is an easy way to do this. Work backwards from what you need in order to live. Think about what you'd call being "successful" and then what level is your baseline for surviving. Be realistic about how much money you need every month. Then once you've got a product idea and can work out a price from the existing market, you know how many clients you need. Now you've got the problem of how you find those clients. It will all eventually come back to marketing and how you position yourself, your solution, and your clients so you can communicate effectively with them and find the right people to work with. But at least now you can structure how you will go about finding them.

Having no income is stressful. Quite simply, don't put yourself in a position where you have no money coming in, or if you do, you'd better be sitting on a big pile of cash already. Start off with a "side hustle" alongside your existing job, or set up a part-time contract (perhaps with your existing employer) that you know you can rely on for a decent amount of time. Six months is too short, in my opinion, unless you have something that's going to be really quick to put together and you can get stuck into marketing it really quickly (and get income soon - but, be warned, it will take longer than you expect).

Once you've worked out who your ideal client is (and this is not a ten-minute job), you can think about where they hang out. Follow people who share useful content on social media so you understand the language they use, the pain points they have, all of that standard marketing stuff any coach will tell you to do. It's the right thing to do. Build your network by simply being yourself. That means join in conversations on other people's posts by adding useful, insightful or simply funny comments - this shows you have a personality and that straight away makes you a more attractive prospect than the stiffly suited types who are masking their real character. Be open to meeting new people from anywhere as some will become friends and advocates.
