I'd emphasize effective communication through written documentation and virtual meetings. I'd leverage collaboration tools like Slack, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams to stay connected with team members and stakeholders. Prioritizing concise documentation ensures everyone stays aligned despite physical distance. Sharpening analytical skills and mastering data visualization tools like Tableau or Power BI would be crucial for delivering insights remotely. Continuous adapting to new technologies and methodologies also, fostering strong relationships with team members and stakeholders through virtual coffee chats or team-building activities helps maintain a sense of camaraderie and collaboration in remote settings.

I have spent most of my career as a primarily remote business analyst and it has shaped the way I approach workshops and collaborative sessions. Here a few tips I have learned along the way: 1 - Have a "remote-first" approach to planning your meeting. Even if you are planning to have everyone together in a room, the reality is that someone may end sick or needing to be remote. 2 - Record the session! There are so many gems that come out of the sessions, use AI tools to transcript and search for keywords later. 3 - Mural/Miro/Teams Whiteboard, are great for collaborating AND saving the information in useful ways. Integrations with things like Trello and JIRA save a lot of manual effort from transcription from post-it notes & pictures.

In the remote setting, your presentation and communication skills are key. Whether you use something like Confluence or Sharepoint, having one space with a GREAT overview page can really help keep your team all on the same page. In order for your team space to be effective it has to be aesthetically pleasing, easy to navigate, well-maintained, and tell the story of the project. A great team space makes it easy to communicate with the team, influence decisions, set the perception of the current status and guide next steps. Another key skill for remote BAs is being able to work collaboratively with the PM to the full team aware of the details without losing the big picture view (casual face to face convos keep that thread when in-person).

To thrive as a business analyst in the remote work environment, I focused on building my professional network online. Remote conversation is harder than face to face so use the ability to record, automate note-taking, and capturing conversational details to your advantage.
