What do you do if you want to switch industries but don't know where to start?

A couple of strategies towards switching industries: One, wearing the same 'hat' (skill, knowledge, experience) in a different sector. Your current knowledge makes a difference. Secondly, training/learning e.g. certifications, bootcamps, formal education, creatively crafting potential internships, are other ways to break into new industries. Thirdly, researching these industries through reading, informational conversations, conferences, deepening your understanding of the industry, leveraging that knowledge to support the first two options. Consistently expand your network using professional/personal contacts to meet and learn from people in the sectors you want to pursue. Everyone knows 'someone' who could become a meaningful lead.

Contacting dozens of Product Managers (or any role) across every MAANG company via LinkedIn messages might succeed, but it's not my preferred approach. Reddit often surprises users with deep insights into specific sectors or companies. Despite the noise and distractions, valuable insights often lie hidden beneath memes. Glassdoor is a well-known resource, yet caution is advisable. Some larger companies actively encourage former and sometimes current employees to remove negative reviews. While Glassdoor remains useful, consider a secondary source when planning a career change.

Research Industry Requirements: Look into the specific skills and qualifications required for the industry you're interested in. For instance, if you're considering a move from marketing to healthcare, research job postings in the healthcare sector to see what skills are in demand. You might find that roles in healthcare require knowledge of medical terminology or experience with electronic health records.

There are 2 levels of research. Secondary & Primary. Research Methodology "Someone has already solved that problem, you just got to find them" Secondary research -> #1 Prompt ChatGPT to give you 10 Google search queries to read upon your target industry. #2 Ask ChatGPT to generate a vertical and horizontal market landscape of the industry #3 Ask ChatGPT to generate a list of companies based on particular vertical/horizontal categorised by big players, new companies, recently funded... Primary Research #1 Search these companies employees who are working at the position you want to target. For example - Director of Analytics in a hospitality company #2 Network with them and ask them how they made it. (Preferably on a call)

How can you update your resume to demonstrate your potential for success in a new career field? Here's the strategy: Identify the key outcomes the new job requires and align your accomplishments with them. For instance, if a client aims to transition from real estate sales to a customer success role in the tech industry, we highlight their ability to build long-term customer relationships and ensure customer success in the real estate context. Also, include any new skills or knowledge gained from recent education or certifications, especially if you've applied them in your current role. Share these experiences, focusing on the results and impact.

There is no better alternative than gaining experience in a specific field before going for the job search. When you switch your to a new industry you will be considered as a fresher. This especially happens in entry roles. But if you can establish yourself as someone who has some credible experience then you can get the salary that an experienced candidate deserves. Take up certificate courses, do internships and take part in live projects. While doing this, focus not only learning but also on delivering results. When you show results, you make it easy for employers to hire you in a new industry.

I'm not a fan of working for free, but it's not a bad idea if you're keen on jumping into a new career. Start with non-profits or volunteer organizations. Reach out directly to its leadership team (email or phone call), describe what you can do, and ask if they could use your capabilities. This tactic works best for anything requiring a highly technical skill, like data visualization or application development. If you're more of a sales/business person, ask if they need help raising funds. The same basic principles apply to charitable giving as they do in sales. This can be especially helpful once you can mention you boosted a charity's fundraising drive using quantifiable metrics which are the gold standard when it comes to resumes.

I’ve switched industry several times. It’s good to experience different industries, it makes you more agile and flexible. It can be challenging in the beginning when you start in a new field. However if the willingness to learn is there, you will overcome these challenges. Sometimes you want to make a switch because you understand that a specific industry will grow. It makes it easier to grow with the industry seamlessly. The technical challenges can be heavy, however if you practice enough it will become light after a while. Being visible and participating in different initiatives will finally help you to be embraced in a community.

Networking doesn't have to be scary or feel gross. Networking is simply about establishing and maintaining professional relationships in a manner that feels comfortable to you. Start by connecting with the people you know professionally, such as your former and present colleagues and classmates. Catch up with folks from time to time, and think of ways you're well-positioned to help them -- not just how they can help you. Reach out to folks in your network who work in your target industry. Your goal at this time is NOT to get a job, but simply to learn more about the industry. This conversation is about them, their role, and their experience. Be genuinely curious, prepare questions in advance, and always thank them for their time.

The beauty is that you're not asking for for a job at this stage, which makes networking less nerve-racking. Most people you will meet would love to share what they know, so it's the perfect opportunity to ask questions and be curious. Make a list of your questions, in particular what they like about the industry or the job, and what they don't like. Above all listen to what the person has to say. If the chemistry is right, you will want to stay in touch, or ask them who else they think you should speak with in order to learn more.

Ask them about the skills and experiences that are most valued in the industry and how you can best position yourself for success. Working on your own project or case-study to demonstrate your knowledge and learning (even if it's at a beginner level) will give the employer that much more assurance that you have built some level of proficiency and that you are serious about your career transition.
