KB ARTICLE CONTRIBUTION #188: I do NOT want to doom and gloom you here, but at the same time, I also do NOT want paint an inaccurate picture about how transitioning into Cybersecurity from IT is going to be a bed of roses. Gaining hands-on experience in Cybersecurity is extremely challenging, especially for "entry-level" roles, because they often require 3-5+ years of security experience as well as applicable certifications. Ideally, you will want to find opportuities to cross train/shadow the Security Team in your current IT role, then upskill into those Cybersecurity roles as they become available. Another option, is to build strong relationships with the Security Team staff, so that you are top of their mind when new roles open up.

-Research roles and assess your skills. -Get certified (e.g., CEH, CompTIA Security+). -Gain hands-on experience through internships or projects. -Network with professionals in the field. -Stay updated and continuously learn. -Apply for jobs and tailor your resume. -Prepare for interviews. -Stay persistent and keep improving.

Certification are great to showcase skills BUT don't think theyre the end all be all. While jobs want Certs at the end of the day if you are bad with soft skills and are bad at interviewing... you should also have a few "pet projects" (Build a home server, do some Linux builds, A cool Raspberry Pi device etc) to make sure youre showing youre more than just good at test taking or memorizing facts.
