To be able to understand how to protect we need to understand the motivation of the attackers, Tactics used for attacks and analyze them, now as an attacker knowing that i need to attack i would look at information i can gather and have based on which i identify vulnerabilities and then identify fix for the same. This can only be dine correctly if you think like an attacker and not as the protector.

Look at your system from the attacker's point of view and try to hack your own system. Do simulation of hacking and this way, you would be able to find several vulnerabilities.
