What do you do if you want to stand out as a candidate pursuing a career in sustainability?

Start working on real projects. Get involved in the ground level, if you become an intern or volunteer you will get amazing learning opportunities. Onground experiences are often better than office desk jobs. When you are young explore more in understanding the ecosystem if you are not a subject expert. It's good to be a Generalist but the key lies in finding what you enjoy doing within Sustainability. Your participation in ground level projects can help you become more practical and standouts from others in any projects where recruiters or companies look for very someone with working experience rather than desk roles experiences.

Choosing to pursue a career in sustainability is itself a great place to start, in today's scenario. Sustainability is not just about the environment, but beyond that. Identify what all is happening globally and do a thorough background study of various aspects and topics in and around sustainability. Subsequently, understand the basic concepts of sustainability. Once this is done, one shall start to identify a niche/focus of interest. Land a job in a particular field of interest/or an entry level opening and dwell into its various aspects. The niche is bound to change with significant work experience.

First: Be honest. In simple words explain where you are now and where you would like to be, without making up any experience. Second: Apply to the roles you are right for. In my career, I receive applications from students with no practical experience for a Director level role. That could indicate a lack of attention to detail and a misunderstanding of the reading. Third: Start and Finish your studies. Enrol with highly recognised organisations, and if you don't have the economic resources to do so, apply for scholarships. There are so many across the world that you cannot miss them. Fourth, and I agree with @akshaygunteti: Be an apprentice, volunteer, get involved with practical and real life projects.

De acuerdo a mi experiencia es muy importante mostrar en el CV no solo las capacidades académicas, que son muy importantes, más no son determinantes. Es necesario mostrar los logros obtenidos en trabajos previos, así como las iniciativas de sostenibilidad que se han logrado implementar gracias a la gestión personal. Es importante además mostrar los voluntariados hechos, como estudiante o como profesionista, ya que eso demuestra que se tiene una convicción profunda en la sostenibilidad y no solamente se le ve como una oportunidad laboral.
